Chys: Not in Smith Diehl, Printing in Batavia: Lindeboom, Dutch Medical Biography, p. 169/70: 'Before 1823 Blume went to Java as inspector of vaccination; he came to work under Reinwardt, whom he also assisted in the management of " 's Lands Plantentuin" at Buitenzorg (founded by Reinwardt). For reasons of health he repatriated in 1826; in the same year he was appointed director of the State Herbarium whereto plants collected by himself and others were transported. The Herbarium was first set up at Brussels, but, after the Belgian rising, transferred to Leiden, where the control remained entrusted to Blume, ...': NNBW VIII, 132: Rare first edition of Blume's first publication. In 22 classes (pp. 29 to end) Blume describes a total of appr. 1300 exotic plants (The Hortus at Buitenzorg even boasted species which grew at high altitudes in Bengalen, Japan, China and Isle de France), indicating the species/genera on the left, followed by initials "W","P", "RS", "R" or "Bl" referring to further descriptions found in Wildenow's "Species Plantarum', in Persoon's "Synopsis Plantarum", in Roemer en Schultes "Species Plantarum", described by Professor Reinwardt (Founder of the Hortus), or described and annotated by Blume himself. The third column gives the local name in the Sunda language, phonetically transcribed by Blume and as a result not always spelled correctly. The engraved folding plate by A. Bik, who according to Blume (Page 8 of his preface) shows here his "eerste proeve in de graveer-kunst" (His first test in the art of engraving).: J. de Loos - Haaxman, "Verlaat Rapport", pp. 19 - 30: A.J.Bik accompanied Reinwardt to Batavia in October 1815, stopping on the way on the Cape where he remained for 6 months. In Batavia he was joined by his brother J.Th. Bik and a year later A.Payen joined them. First edition in French translation of Boccaccio's early prose novel "Filocolo". The translation was made by Adrien Sevin, secretary to François Duc de Rohan. 'In his dedication to Madame Claude de Rohan, Sevin exposes the historical background of the story of Florio and Biancafiore and the romantic circumstances of its composition, then continues with an adaptation of Luigi da Porto's novella "Giulietta e Romeo". Although Sevin knew Italian well, he altered the names found in the original text, the lovers for instance becoming Halquadrich and Burglipha, and the scene being shifted from Verona to 'Morée', at 'Coron'.: Stephen Rawles, 'Denis Janot (fl. 1529 - 1544), Parisian Printer and Bookseller. The recipient is the famous French bibliographer, bibliophile and collector A.A. Renouard. In the well written letter Handwerck, Director of the l'imprimerie Royale, mentions a number of Bodoni editions, recently produced and / or in the process of printing: 'Je viens de faire une très belle edition de Boethius Consolatione Philosophiae in grand in 4to et in 4o piccolo. cette edition dont on n'a tiré que 300 exemplaires [4to] e 200 in [4to piccolo] est LA PLUS BELLE DE TOUS LES OUVRAGES sortis des presses de cette imprimerie... J'imprime actuellement la traduction italienne de Varchi de cet ouvrage... J'ai réimprimé Characterum Ethicorum Theophrasti Eresii Capita Amadutia 1. volume in 4o... '. He sends 'Le Baptisterre' [Christening gift?] from his friend Feneulle to Citoyen Regnault. The Cossali arithmetica not printed yet.

Giambattista Bodoni [1740 - 1830], typographer, type designer, compositor, printer & founder of the world renowned printing & publishing house Bodoni in Parma. His type face designs and his compositor's work, reached an unrivalled degree of perfection, to some even to the point of mechanical perfection, resulting in a sterile and cold appearance. This letter written in autograph by J. George Handwerck, Bodoni's right hand man, Director of the firm & most important contributor to the business.
