Salvian of Marseilles; Saint Vincent of Lerins; Baluze, Etienne .
Sanctorum Presbyterorum Salviani Massiliensis Et Vincentii Lirinensis Opera. Stephanvs Balvzivs Tutelensis Ad Fidem Veterum Codicum Mss. Emendavit, Notisque Illustravit. Editio Secvnda.
Parisiis: Franciscum Muguet, MDCLXIX. [1669]. [1669]. - Octavo, 7-5/8 inches high by 4-3/4 inches wide. Early tan calf with raised bands, ruled with decorations in blind on the covers. The covers are nearly detached and the head & tail of the spine are chipped. The covers are scuffed with wear to the corners and a name is penned on the front cover. [12], 452, and [32] pages. Illustrated with a title vignette, an engraving by Noblin after François Chauveau at the head of the dedication and several decorative initials. There are occasional very light pencil notations in the margins. There is offsetting and light soiling to the endpapers and pastedowns. There is some minor dampstaining to the top front corner of the last few pages. An internally very good complete copy. Second edition, with additional notes by Baluze. Baluze dedicates this 1669 edition of the works of Salvian and Vincent of Lerins to Jacques-Nicholas Colbert, the archbishop of Rouen and the son of Jean-Baptiste Colbert, a statesman who served under Louis XIV. The contents include a Preface by Baluze followed by P.1-192 : "Salviani Massii. de Gubernatione Dei Lib. I - [VIII]", p. 193-216 : "Salviani Massii. Epistolae", p.217-312 : "Salviani Liber I. [-IV.] Adversus Avaritiam". Following a half title is the work of Vincent, p. 315-371: "Vincentii Lirinensis commonitorium." The works of Salvian of Marseilles and Vincent of Lerins in this edition by Etienne Baluze was first published in Paris in 1663. Salvian's works were based on what is referred to as "Manuscript A". Manuscript A came from the abbey of St. Peter at Corbie in Northern France and is now housed in the Bibliotheque Nationale Francais in Paris. Baluze issued this Second Edition in 1669 with a voluminous section of notes (P. 373-442), and an appendix (p. 443-452). The volume concludes with a detailed index consisting of 32 pages (f. Ff3-Hh2). Salvian of Marseilles (circa a.d.400- after 480) was a priest of Marseilles, an instructor of bishops and an ecclesiastical writer. His chief work is DE GUBERNATIONE DEI (On the Governance of God). He theorizes that God creates calamities in order to execute judgment upon the unfaithful. Saint Vincent of Lerins (d. before 450) was an ecclesiastical writer whose Feast day is celebrated on May 24. He was a Semipelagian who opposed the doctrine of St. Augustine. His only known authentic work is the "Commonitorium". Written under the pseudonym Peregrinus it is best known for Vincent's maxim: "Moreover, in the Catholic Church itself, all possible care must be taken that we hold that faith which has been believed everywhere, always, by all." Etienne Baluze (1630-1718), also known as Stephanus Baluzius, was secretary to the archbishop of Toulouse, Pierre de Marca and inherited all of the archbishop's papers upon his death. Based on these, he produced the first complete edition of Marca's "Treatise De libertatibus Ecclesiae Gallicanae" in 1663 and the "Marca hispanica" in 1688. Entering the service of Jean-Baptiste Colbert in 1667, Baluze was in charge of the minister's significant library. He was appointed to the post of king's almoner and then professor of Canon Law at the College de France. Taking up the history of the House of Auvergne just as the cardinal de Bouillon was seeking to prove that the La Tour family descended in a direct line from the 9th Century counts of Auvergne, he was inundated with false and forged documents and spurious genealogies such as that which had already been published by Christophe Justel. Its not surprising that Baluze was duped, as even Chorier, the historian of the Dauphiny, had included a forged deed in the second volume of his history. The cardinal the Bouillon had many enemies and a war of pamphlets began which eventually resulted in an inquiry which led to the arrest and conviction of Jean de Bar and other forgers. Despite this, Baluze was obstinate and was convinced that the documents were genuine and published two works based on, and including, all of these spurious deeds. Engulfed in disgrace, he was exiled to Tours until 1713. From the library of geologist and mining engineer James Douglas, after whom Douglas, Arizona was named, with his bookplate on the front pastedown. Douglas, who was born in Quebec, spent much of his early life in Scotland. For many years, as a metallurgist and mining engineer, he was involved in several important Western American enterprises. The text is in Latin. Good .

Roebling, Mary. (1905-1994). American banker. First woman to serve as president of a major U.S. bank and first woman governor of the American Stock Exchange.
Typed Letter Signed by American Banker Mary Roebling, First Woman President of a U.S. Bank.
Trenton, NJ: September 9, 1976. 1976. Trenton, NJ: September 9, 1976. 1976. Fine. - 84 words typed on a sheet of cream-colored 11 inch high by 8-1/2 inch wide National State Bank letterhead with 'Mary G. Roebling / Chairman of the Board" printed at the top below a vignette of a sailing ship. Signed "Mary Roebling". There is a small pencil notation at top right. Folded twice for mailing. Near fine.

Roebling writes to Congressman Seymour Halpern, regretting that she cannot attend the signing of the new Declaration of Independence for children. "I am sure the affair will be most successful. Certainly it is in behalf of a most worthwhile effort. Child abuse and child neglect is appalling and daily the newspapers tell of more and more cases."

Mary Roebling [1905-1994] was an American banker. After the death of her second husband Siegfried Roebling in 1936, she took his seat on the Trenton Trust Company board. She was elected president of the board in January 1937, the first woman to serve as president of a major U.S. bank. When the bank merged with National State Bank in 1972, she chaired the combined banks until 1984. From 1958 to 1962 she was governor of the American Stock Exchange, their first woman governor.

The Queens, New York Republican Congressman Seymour Halpern (1913-1997) started his political career as a campaign aide to New York's powerful mayor Fiorella La Guardia and first served in New York's State Senate for 14 years before seeking a seat in the U.S. Congress. In Albany Halpern sponsored 279 bills that became law, including measures on schools, housing, civil rights, nutrition and mental health. A Liberal, he was something of an anomaly as the lone Republican representative from New York City, and generally garnered support from Labor Unions and endorsement from the Liberal Party. Yet he never even considered switching parties as he considered membership in the Republican Party a family tradition and commitment. While he found ample time for his private pursuits, including painting and collecting autographs, he took his legislative duties very seriously. Of these, he was proudest of his co- sponsorship of the 1964 Civil Rights Act and of the original 1965 Medicare legislation. Fine .

Bankhead, Tallulah (1902-1968).
5 Large Original Vintage Photographs of the Hollywood Movie Star Tallulah Bankhead and Child Star Dickie Moore.
[1932], [1932]. - A group of five sienna-toned gelatin silver photographs of the Hollywood movie star Tallulah Bankhead pictured with the young Dickie Moore. Each photograph measures 14 inches high by 11 inch wide. Four of the images are printed on glossy buff photo paper and a fifth, a duplicate of one of the others, is printed on heavier buff stock which yields a softer hued tone. Those two identical images depict Tallulah Bankhead in a black pant suit over a white turtleneck seated on the stoop of a doorway with the young blond Dickie Moore seated in her lap. Smiling brightly, the child actor is wearing a striped shirt and shorts with leather shoes. There is a tiny tear to the top edge of the photo printed on glossy paper with a small spot of rubbing. In a third photograph, Dickie Moore is seated on the stairs of that same stoop, centered between Tallulah Bankhead and another young woman (likely also an actress), offering each a white carnation. A deeply creased piece from the bottom right corner of that photograph is ready to tear away and has been reinforced with archival linen tape from the verso. In a fourth photograph, Tallulah and Dickie are seated side by side on the stairs of a stoop, each eating an ice cream cone. There is a tiny tear to the top edge of that photo and a small spot or rubbing to the left of the image. The top right corner is deeply creased. In the fifth and last image, Tallulah is striding along a path between hedges in front of a house, holding Dickie by the hand. The boy is looking up at her as he eats his ice cream cone. The top and bottom right corners of that photograph are deeply creased. In addition, all of the photos are also slightly creased, with minor wear to the edges and slight curling though these could easily be flattened out. Good. A friend of Tallulah Bankhead's, Hollywood child actor Dickie Moore was filming "Blonde Venus" with Marlene Deitrich at the time these photographs were taken. Dickie was also frequently featured in the "Our Gang" series during that period. The lovely Hollywood movie star Tallulah Bankhead appeared in several movies between 1931 and 1932: "Tarnished Lady", "My Sin", "The Cheat", "Thunder Below", "Make Me A Star", "Devil and the Deep" and "Faithless". Good .
