[New York]: October 30th, 1956. 1956. - Nineteen autographs penned on a gilt-edged, cream-colored page, 10-3/4 inches high by 8-3/4 inches wide, removed from the guest book of Grace Bristed Jackson and C. D. Jackson at the Dakota. Dated "Oct. 30th 1956", the signatures are identified along the top as those of guests present at a "Party in Honour of Prince Bernhard of the Netherlands. 14 signatures are penned in a column along the left and another 5 signatures, including that of Prince Bernhard, are penned in a column at right. Near fine. Charles Douglas Jackson [known as "C.D."] and his wife Grace Bristed Jackson hosted parties and events at their apartment in the Dakota. Jackson worked on and off at Time magazine in an administrative capacity for many years and was made vice president of Time, Inc. in 1940. He was periodically sent on various diplomatic missions by Eisenhower. He also found time to serve on the boards of several organizations, including the Boston Symphony Orchestra, the Free Europe Committee and Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts. The signatures along the left include those of: 1) Axel Bussche-Streithorst [Axel von dem Bussche] (1919-1993). A World War II German officer who, as part of the German Resistance, planned to assassinate Adolf Hitler in 1943. Stationed on the Eastern front, Bussche had witnessed the massacre of over 3,000 Jewish civilians by the SS at the Dubno airport in Poland in 1942. Traumatized by the experience, he joined a resistance group within the army led by Count Stauffenberg. Selected to model new uniforms when Hitler was due to inspect these at his Fuhrerhauptquartier Wolfsschanze in November 1943, Bussche undertook to carry out a suicide bombing to kill the Fuhrer. His plans were thwarted when, the night before the event, an Allied air raid on Berlin destroyed the railway truck transporting the new uniforms. He volunteered to try again but was seriously wounded on the Eastern front in January of 1944, losing one of his legs. He was one of the very few who was not betrayed and thus survived the war. 2) Hamilton Fish Armstrong (1893-1973), was a United States diplomat, author and editor. He worked for the New Republic and served as military attache in Serbia during the First World War. In 1922, Armstrong became editor of "Foreign Affairs", the journal of the Council on Foreign Relations, taking over as editor after Archibald Cary Coolidge's death in 1928. Armstrong authored several books including "The New Balkans" and "Hitler's Reich: The First Phase". 3) Maria de Almagro Abreu. 4) Brooke Astor (1902-2007) was an American philanthropist, socialite and writer. Brooke Astor chaired the Vincent Astor Foundation named after her third husband, the son of John Jacob Astor IV. Her father, John Henry Russell, Jr. was the 16th Commandant of the Marine Corps and Brooke Astor spent much of her childhood in China, the Dominican Republic, Haiti and other places where her father was stationed. 5) Henry R. Luce (1898-1967) was one of the most influential persons of his day. The magazine magnate owned such well-known periodicals as Time magazine, Life, Fortune, and Sports Illustrated. Born in Tengchow, China to missionary parents he attended the Hotchkiss School and subsequently Yale, where he worked on the school newspapers. Blocked by FDR from covering the front during the Second World War, he was a staunch Republican and blatantly opposed FDR, subsequently appointing Whittaker Chambers as acting Foreign News editor in 1944. As part of the China Lobby he played a major role in shaping American sentiment in support of Chiang Kai-Shek and later demanded that Kennedy invade Cuba. He included Secreteray of State John Foster Dulles and CIA director Allen Dulles among his friends. 6) Hamilton Armstrong. 7) Willy Goudrian. 8) Neil [?]. 9) Enno Hobbing. In his book "A Secret Order: Investigating the High Strangeness and Synchronicity in the JFK Assassination", H.P. Albarelli, Jr. writes the following about CIA operative Enno Hobbing: "In 2006 writer Thomas Bass, a professor at the University of Albany, stated in a radio interview: 'Many spies have worked for Time Magazine, at least the spies we know of, were, in fact, working for the Central Intelligence Agency. There's that very famous example of Time magazine Bureau Chief, Mr. Enno Hobbing, who was, in 1954, moved from Paris to Guatemala where he led the coup d'etat while working out of the offices of Time". 10) George & Symphorosa Livermore. 11) Dorothy Breck (spouse of Henry C. Breck). 12) Edgar R. B[?]. 13) Henry C. Breck (Partner in J &W Seligman & Co. stock brokers). 14) "Yet" (Henriette) Roosenberg (1916-1972). "Yet" Roosenberg was a Dutch journalist and political prisoner. A graduate student at the start of World War II, she became a courrier for the Dutch resistance serving under the code name "Zip" and wrote for the newspaper "Het Parool". Captured in 1944, she was sentenced to death and sent to a German prison at Waldheim. Freed in 1945, in order to care for another very sick former prisoner she and a few other prisoners stayed behind instead of boarding American trucks which would cross Russian lines to bring them back home to the Netherlands. Helping their friend to a hospital, the group then undertook the journey on their own. Accosted by Russians, they were sent to a "displaced persons camp" and, it was only after several adventures documented in her memoirs "The Walls Came Tumbling Down", that they finally made their way home. After the war, "Yet" Roosenburg became a correspondent for "Time, Inc.". Five more autographs are penned in a column at right. Heading the list is that of Prince Bernhard of the Netherlands (1911-2004), the German-born consort of Queen Juliana of the Netherlands. Opposed to Hitler, he banned the Swastika from the street bunting. The Dutch Royal family fled to England when Germany invaded the Netherlands in 1940 but Prince Bernhard insisted on returning to join Dutch troops fighting their final battle against the invaders. He was again forced to flee and returned to England. General Eisenhower appointed the Prince Commander-in-Chief of the Dutch Forces when Dutch troops, now aided by the allies, fought in France in 1944 and the Prince took charge of the Dutch resitance forces, playing a vital role in that country's war effort. Despite his heroic war record, Prince Bernhard's reputation was later overshadowed by his disgrace due to his involvement in the 1976 financial scandal involving the Dutch air force and Lockheed. We're unable to identify the next two signatures. Following these is the autograph of Simone de Lippe, the wife of Prince Aschwin and that of Prince Aschwin of Lippe-Biesterfeld (1914-1988). The younger brother of Prince Bernhard of Lippe-Biesterfeld, Prince Aschwin openly supported the Nazis and became an officer in the Wehrmacht. An expert in Chinese painting and Indian sculpture, he became a curator at New York's Metropolitan Museum of Art after the war. Fine .

The 1951 Album was produced by Jean Dalrymple and the Mistresses of Ceremonies were Fay Emerson, Hedda Hopper, Margaret Webster and Tallulah Bankhead. Among the evening's performances were scenes from the musical productions "Finian's Rainbow", the operatic version of "Emperor Jones", "Annie Get Your Gun", "Porgy and Bess" and "Of Thee I Sing"; from the ballet "Rodeo", with music by Aaron Copland; and from the plays "My Sister Eileen" [with Shirley Booth], "Camille" [two versions, one with Uta Hagen, one with Eva LeGallienne], "Our Town" [with Thornton Wilder as the Stage Manager] and Shaw's "The Devil's Disciple". Its aims were advanced by the publication of its Journal, originally called The Assurance Magazine, which first appeared in September 1850. The magazine was founded by two well-known actuaries, Charles Jellicoe and Samuel Brown, and was adopted as the organ of the Institute of Actuaries in 1852.
