The interior is in very good condition.; Exhibition of Chinese ceramics from public and private collections in Japan organized under the joint sponsorship of the agency for cultural affairs of the Japanese government and the participating institutions in the United States. Held at Asia House Gallery New York; Seattle Art Museum Kimbell Art Museum, Fort Worth; and Asian Art Museum of San Francisco, The Avery Brundage Collection.; Chinese ceramics have been treasured in Japan for over 1200 years. This volume, which focuses on excavated pieces and heirlooms (densei-hin) brought to Japan between the eight and seventeenth centuries, provides a new perspective on China's ceramic art. Assembled here are some of the finest examples of Chinese ceramics acquired by Japanese connoisseurs over the centuries. They range from bold T'ang three-colour wares to luminous Sung celadons and delicate Ming porcelains decorated in vivid polychrome overglazed enamels. The prized possessions of courtiers, warlords, tea masters, and merchants, many of these pieces became so well-known that they were given evocative nicknames. Several, made to order for Japanese customers, have no counterpart in Western collections. In their introductory essays, Seizo Hayashiya, Curator of Applied Arts at the Tokyo National Museum, and Henry Trubner, Associate Director of the Seattle Art Museum, outline the history of Chinese ceramics in Japan and discuss the cultural relationship that has long linked these two countries. Very Good/Dust Jacket Included.

Yabe, Y. K.
Jiu Jitsu: An Exposition of the Japanese National System of Physical Training and Self-Defense
Rochester, New York, Yabe School of Jiu-Jitsu, 1904. 1st. Paperback. First printing. 32 + (1) pp. frontis port. of Mr. Yabe (with printed "signature" of Mr. Yabe), full-page illustrations showing: come-along hold, vital touch, walking with hands on knees (exercise), the struggle (demonstrated by two women), President Roosevelt, softcover book in light-brown wraps, about 5" X 7". Subject headings include: Explanatory, Origin of the Japanese Nation, What Jiu-jitsu Is and Means, Jiu-jitsu vs Boxing, What Jiu-jitsu Will Do for You, Jiu-jitsu a Blessing to Women, Jiu-jitsu Successfully Taught by Mail, What Constitutes the Course, Description of the Courses, How Knowledge of Jiu-jitsu Saved Sherlock Holmes Life, Advantages of a Correspondence Course, President Roosevelt Endorses Jiu-jitsu, A Guarantee of Success, Cost of Course. This book serves as an introduction to and promotion for the full five-part Yabe School course. A very fragile item printed on cheap-quality paper. A complete copy, but overall edge-wear with short nicks and small chips here and there. The front cover was detached but has been neatly repaired. A semi-transparent red cellophane protective cover was installed by an early owner and has served to protect the book quite well, but has left some tape shadows. The cover states "The Yabe School of Jiu-jitsu" in English, plus has some Japanese lettering. The rear cover has the Japanese flower symbol. Scans available. Very rare and interesting item, the only one we've seen. The individual course volumes are rare but do come up occasionally. Good.

Yabe, H.
Jubilee Publication in the commemoration of prof. H. Yabe, M. I. A. sixtieth birthday. Volumes I-II.
Tokyo, 1939-1942. In two volumes. Large 8vo (26.1 x 19.1 cm). 1,251 pp.; one portrait, numerous plates. Original uniform printed wrappers. = Includes the important bibliography of the published writings of Yabe up to 1.IV.1939 mainly on geology, palaeontology and micropalaeontology. The many fine contributions in Japanese with English summaries, or in English, contain numerous new data including quite a few on fossils and with descriptions and illustrations of new and poorly known species. We find, for instance, Sitihei Nomura's "Summary of the fossil and Recent Japanese Pyramidellidae, with the description of several new species" which is of great importance to the study of this parasitic snail family throughout the Indo-Pacific. Front wrapper with repaired tear and right bottom corner a little warped affecting first few pages. Vague stamp on front wrappers, lacking the rear wrapper of the second volume (replaced by another board), spines consolidated, otherwise a very good set.
