Collectif, under the direction of Nicolas Cendo
Rivages Des Origines: Archives Des "Cahiers Du Sud
Marseille, France, Archives de la Ville de Marseille, 1981. First Edition. Hardcover. Size: 4to 11" - 13" tall. An absolutely stellar condition copy in hardcover format of the catalog that augmented the exposition that was sponsored by the Archives de la Ville de Marseille, 27 Novembre - 31 Décembre, 1981, in Marseille, France. Under the direction of Nicolas Cendo, and with the assistance of Marc Faigre, Jean-Luc Sarre, bound in a tall, heavy quarto format, with xvi + 366 pp., numerous illustrations, black and white and full color, original white cloth binding from the publisher. Bright and shiny dust jacket, illustrated, showing only very minor wear, protected by a plastic coat, dust jacket not being price-clipped. Les Cahiers du Sud was not a journal like the others. A "deep-sea review" in the words of Marcel Brion, it very quickly became so through the grace of Jean Ballard, André Gaillard, Léon-Gabriel Gros, Albert Coste, Joë Bousquet, and others, originating from a modest review of college students founded in 1914 by Marcel Pagnol and a few friends. Double-column text in French, and with sterling reviews of a large number of artists in the Surrealism vein. An indispensable reference for art historians.Member, I.O.B.A., C.B.A., and adherent to the highest ethical standards. . . . As New/As New,

Hitchcock, Frank (1867-1935). Postmaster General under Taft, credited with establishing the first U.S. air mail service.
The Former Postmaster General Frank Hitchcock's Autograph on an Envelope Commemorating the 20th Anniversary of the First Air Mail Flight.
Mineola, NY, September 23, 1931. 1931. Mineola, NY, September 23, 1931. 1931. Very good. - A 3-5/8 inch high by 6-1/2 inch wide envelope illustrated with vignettes of the First Air Mail Flight which took off from Mineola in 1911 and the 1931 equivalent. "Mineola Chamber of Commerce" and the date are stamped in green at the top left and three two cent U.S. postage stamps at right are postmarked with the date and canceled. Addressed to Seymour Halpern in type, the envelope is signed in ink vertically along the left edge "Frank Hitchock / P.M.G. 1911", indicating his position as Postmaster General when that first air mail flight took off in 1911. The envelope is opened and a return address is typed on the flap on the verso. Very good.

Chairman of the Republican National Committee from 1908 to 1909, Frank Harris Hitchcock (1867-1935) was Postmaster General of the United States under President Taft from 1909 to 1913. Hitchcock is credited with establishing the first U.S. airmail service and with cracking down on mail fraud.

The recipient, Queens, New York Republican Congressman Seymour Halpern (1913-1997) started his political career as a campaign aide to New York's powerful mayor Fiorella La Guardia and first served in New York's State Senate for 14 years before seeking a seat in the U.S. Congress. In Albany Halpern sponsored 279 bills that became law, including measures on schools, housing, civil rights, nutrition and mental health. A Liberal, he was something of an anomaly as the lone Republican representative from New York City, and generally garnered support from Labor Unions and endorsement from the Liberal Party. Yet he never even considered switching parties as he considered membership in the Republican Party a family tradition and commitment. While he found ample time for his private pursuits, including painting and collecting autographs, he took his legislative duties very seriously. Of these, he was proudest of his co- sponsorship of the 1964 Civil Rights Act and of the original 1965 Medicare legislation. Very good .

Portrait from a Periodical Inscribed & Signed by the American Dramatist Owen Davis.
1930. 1930. - A 5 inch high by 3-1/2 inch wide sienna-toned portrait of the playwright and author Owen Davis clipped from a periodical and mounted onto a 7-1/2 inch high by 4-3/8 inch wide sheet clipped from yet another periodical or program. The portrait is inscribed and signed below the image "To Seymour Halpern / Owen Davis / Feb, 1930". The portrait was once folded and there is creasing and a short tear to the left edge of the page on which it is mounted. A portion of a color illustration is pictured on the verso. Good. The American dramatist Owen Gould Davis (1874-1956) was awarded the 1923 Pulitzer Prize for Drama for his play "Icebound". Davis authored hundreds of plays as well as scripts for radio and film and also wrote for the Police gazette under the pseudonym of Ike Swift. His first play "Through the Breakers" opened in Bridgeport, Connecticut in 1897 and a subsequent play "Reaping the Whirlwind" opened on Broadway in 1900. Though he penned most of his plays either under his own name or under the pseudonym of John Oliver, he also made use of several other pseudonyms including Martin Hurley, Arthur J. Lamb, Walter Lawrence, and Robert Wayne. DUDLEY, Margaret G., Ph.D., under the direction of C. H. A. Walton, MD
A Manitobareport on Investigations Into the Incidence and Prevalence of Air-Borne Allergens in
NP (Winnipeg, MB), Published by the author, 1953. Hardcover. Thick 4to. Bound in green buckram with gilt lettering to front board. Light shelf wear to the boards. The contents are stoutly bound, and in good condition, given that they are photocopies. This is a curious item. The contents are unpaginated (about 250 pages) and are, for the most part, photocopied. However, it appears from the hand-written page headings, and corrections to the text, that this may have been the author's working copy; containing much material on yearly field trips, newspaper interviews and reports, photos, and material relating to the investigations. It is inscribed on the front free endpaper: 'To Mrs. Hough with thanks and Kind Regards from Margaret Dudley'. A typed note, laid-in loose, says that Mrs. Alice Hough was the secretary to Dr. C.H.A. Walton, of the Winnipeg Clinic, who assisted Dr. Dudley 'in the production of this book'. Also laid-in loose is a 3 1/2' x 5' colour photograph of the author as an elderly woman. She is shown working at her desk. Lastly, laid-in loose is an off-print of an article which appeared in 'The Prairie Garden' magazine in 1978. The article is entitled 'Manitoba's Floral Emblem', and is by Dr. Margaret Dudley, who is described as an 'author, researcher, and former lecturer in botany, University of Manitoba.' It does not appear that Dr. Dudley ever published 'Air Borne Allergens'. WorldCat does list one institutional holding at (not surprisingly) The University of Manitoba. That one other copy was produced suggests that the author made some attempt to publish this work. Ill.: black-&-white illustrations.

Féval, Paul (under pseudonym Sir Francis Trolopp).
Londen en zijn geheimen [Les Mystères de Londres].
Antwerpen, Louis Legros, 1886-1887, 1st (and only) Flemish ed., 4 vols.,contemporary unif. green halfcloth with marbled boards. = Very rare incunable of detective fiction. Paul Féval (1816-1857) was a French novelist and dramatist and the author of legendary adventure novels, such as Le loup blanc (1843) and Le Bossu (1857) which made him world-famous. He was also the author of several vampire fiction novels, but his most important claim to fame is being one of the fathers of modern crime fiction. His novel Jean Diable (1862) may be considered the world's first modern novel of detective fiction. Féval's success started with Les Mysteres de Londres (1844), which was a sprawling feuilleton written to cash in on the success of Eugene Sue's Les Mysteres de Paris. In it, Irishman Fergus O'Breane tries to avenge the wrongs of his countrymen by seeking the annihilation of England. The plot anticipates that of Alexandre Dumas' The Count of Monte Christo by one year. The novel features a maffia-like criminal secret society called Gentlemen of the Night, a theme that will become recurrent in Féval's oeuvre. Féval published the series under the psuedonym Sir Francis Trolopp. With Les Mysteres de Londres, Féval became the equal of Dumas and Sue in th eyes of his contemporaries. However, he was unhappy about his success as the author of adventure novels and soon tried to gain literary recognition with social satires, but without the desired success. In 1862 he published Jean Diable, arguably the first modern crime thriller. In it, Scotland Yard Chief Superintendent Gregory Temple is mystified by the actions of a supremely gifted crime leader who hides behind the identity of John Devil. In 1863, Féval embarked on his masterpiece, Les Habits noirs, a sprawling criminal saga written over a twelve-year period, comprising seven novels. He retroactively incorporated Les Mystères de Londres, Les Compagnons du Silence (itself a sequel to an earlier work, Bel Demonio (1850)) and Jean Diable into the chronology of Les Habits Noirs, creating a veritable human comedy of evil and secret conspiracies. By its methods, themes and characters, Les Habits Noirs is the precursor of today's conspiracy and organized crime novels. Féval's heroes, from Gregory Temple, the first detective, to Remy d'Arx, the investigative magistrate who pursues the Habits Noirs, are also the first modern heroes of their kind. 91, [1]; 26, [2]; [40] ll.Three rare editions of humanist works in a contemporary panel-stamped binding, all well produced and the panel stamps finely rendered. Fogelmark (p. 33) calls panel-stamps with gothic animals in foliage "the Flemish panel stamp par préférence". We have not found an exact match in the literature. The impressions of the panels are very crisp and clear, especially that on the lower half of the front board.Ad 1: First Basel edition of an account of the sacerdotium (priesthood) and administration in ancient Rome, written by the Florentine humanist Andrea Domenico Fiocco (d. 1452), assuming the name of a first century Roman writer, Lucius Fenestella. It is followed by a work on the same subject by the Italian humanist Giulio Pomponio Leto (1428-1498), and a list of abbreviations by Valerius Probus. While these works by Fiocco and Leto had been published together since 1510, the present edition introduces a new form that seems to have become the standard followed by others.Ad 2: Rare Antwerp edition of satirical dialogues by the 2nd-century rhetorician Lucianus of Samosata (now in Turkey near the Syrian border), often simply called Lucian in English.
