Hij werkt bij een bank �"“ wat hij ervaart als een straf. Door een speling van het lot komt hij terecht in het huis van de bankdirecteur. Diens dochter wordt zijn ondergang.Ironie was nooit ver weg in het leven van Italo Svevo. Zo zag hij zich gedwongen te gaan werken voor de bank van zijn schoonvader toen hij weinig succes had met Een leven, zijn debuut. Dat gebrek is achteraf bezien vreemd, want de psychologische roman was baanbrekend: Svevo ontleedt en beschrijft met grote precisie en in zijn unieke stijl het lijden en het lot van zijn hoofdpersoon. Een onaangepast mens, zoals de titel oorspronkelijk luidde.James Joyce ontmoette Svevo in Triëst, waar hij woonde, en werd een bewonderaar van diens werk.
