L'oncle de la jeune fille, le chanoine Fulbert, avait demandé à Abélard de donner à cette dernière des leçons particulières, qui se transformèrent rapidement.. ''Dans notre ardeur, nous avons traversé toutes les phases de l'amour'' : passion, plaisir, raffinement. ''C'est la concupiscence plus que la tendresse qui t'a attaché à moi, rappelant à Abélard les enivrements de la volupté, qu'Héloïse préfère d'ailleurs appeler du terme plus expressif de fornication.
