Cullen, Countee
The Black Christ & Other Poems
New York, Harper & Brothers, 1929. First Edition. . Size: 8vo 8" - 9" tall. Sturdy, attractive, tightly bound hardcover, clean, if lightly toned interior, minimal rubbing to extremities. Some extremely dramatic black-and-white engraved woodcuts by Charles Cullen, his brother. Blue cloth over boards, black cloth-backed. Abraded paper label to front cover, black over tan. Even more abraded paper title label to spine. Moderate rubbing to extremities, light bleed-through of blue at upper rear panel. 110 pp. and with a final, arresting, Christian-themed image at end. Countee Cullen (born Countee LeRoy Porter; May 30, 1903 – January 9, 1946) was an extremely important American poet, novelist, children's writer, and playwright. His importance to the so-called Harlem Renaissance is unquestioned. His precise birthplace remains unknown, whether Baltimore, Maryland, New York City or Louisville. He was adopted at age 15 by "Reverend Frederick A. Cullen, pastor of Salem Methodist Episcopal Church, Harlem's largest congregation, and his wife, the former Carolyn Belle Mitchell; the former became "president of the Harlem chapter of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP)" (Wikipedia). His eventual marriage to W.E.B. Du Bois's daughter Yolande was allegedly the social event of the year but the marriage was fraught with tension not least owing to Countee's stated love for men despite his love for his wife (and hers for him). This collection, The Black Christ & other poems, look at the importance of faith and justice among African-Americans, linking their pain and suffering with that of Jesus Christ. Countee Cullen was an exceedingly-proud-of-his-race man, a fine poet and man. He wrote painfully about racial segregation, Jim Crow laws and lynching in the South. The final image offered by Charles Cullen suggests a sort of Black Messiah figure (dedicated, he says, to White America") and that was fleshed out in the work of "other African-American writers such as Langston Hughes, Claude Mackay, and Jean Toomer" (Wikipedia). The illustrator, Charles Cullen, was apparently unrelated, but he also did decorations and illustrations for Langston Hughes. 110 pp.Member, I.O.B.A., C.B.A., and adherent to the highest ethical standards. . . . Max O'Rell, A Frenchman in America (the Anglo-Saxon Race Revisited)
Max O'Rell
A Frenchman in America (the Anglo-Saxon Race Revisited)
Bristol, J.W. Arrowsmith, 1891. Cloth. A charming edition of this travel work by Max O'Rell, copiously illustrated with 'upwards of 130 illustrations' by E.W. Kemble. Max O'Rell, the pseudonym of Leon Paul Blouet, was a French author and journalist best known for his works which provided observations and comparisons of Anglo-American and French culture. This text details the incredibly successful author's lecturing tour around the United States, where he was considered the bestselling foreign lecturer of his time. Edward Windsor Kemble, usually cited as E. W. Kemble, was an American illustrator best known for illustrating the first edition of Mark Twain's 'Adventures of Huckleberry Finn&apos. Kemble, born in Sacramento, California, demonstrated an early artistic talent, becoming a successful contributor to periodicals by 1881 at the age of twenty. Impressed by his youth and considerable talent, the 'New York Daily Graphic' offered him the position as the major political cartoonist for the paper, whilst Kemble receiving his only formal artistic training at the Art Students League of New York. This position quickly led Kemble to contribute to other major publications, such as 'Life magazine', 'Collier's', 'Harper's Weekly' and 'Leslie's Weekly&apos. It was these lively cartoons, some of the magazine industry's most mature work, that attracted the attention of Mark Twain, who employed Kemble for his most well-known work; the illustrations for 'Adventures of Huckleberry Finn&apos. This copy features a publisher's advertisement to the front pastedown, as well as three further advertisements to the rear of the text. In a brown cloth binding. Externally, sound with slight rubbing. Some slight wear to head and tail of spine, as well as marks to boards. Joints starting but firm. Internally, generally fimly bound, though back board is loosening. Pages generally bright and clean. Very Good . Ill.: E. W. Kemble. Very Good .

James Nares
New York: Rizzoli International 2014. 4to. 272 pp. Very Good. Hard Cover. Illustrated paper covered boards. Dust Jacket Very Good. Minor shelf wear on Dust Jacket, else fine. Color plates throughout. ISBN: 0847842576 9780847842575. Since his 1974 arrival in New York, James Nares has been a central member of the vibrant downtown art and music scene. Once described by Glenn O'Brien as the last of the Action Painters, Nares attempts to capture his work's own creation. Produced with handmade brushes, his monumental strokes are almost three-dimensional in the degree of detail and depth they reveal. In 2008, the artist rediscovered numerous of his experimental Super 8 films from the 1970s. Now Nares is renowned as both a filmmaker and a painter singularly concerned with physicality and ways to illustrate the unfolding of time. Produced in close collaboration with the artist, this definitive monograph surveys the entirety of Nares's career, including many unpublished works. With essays and commentary by critics including Amy Taubin, Ed Halter, and Glenn O'Brien, the book also includes an illuminating and personal conversation between the artist and Christopher Wool. This long-awaited comprehensive monograph on James Nares brings together his paintings and films. Upon his arrival in New York in 1974, British-born James Nares became a central member of the city's vibrant No Wave art scene, making experimental Super 8 films, playing in downtown bands, and staging live performances. The following decade, he turned to painting, using handmade brushes to create monumental strokes that are almost three-dimensional in their detail and depth. Today, Nares continues to employ the mediums of film and paint to explore physicality, motion, and the unfolding of time, as seen in his 2011 video Street, exhibited to great acclaim at such institutions as the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York. This definitive monograph, produced in close collaboration with the artist, surveys the entirety of Nares's career. Lushly illustrated, including paintings, photographs, and stills that have never before been published, the book features essays by leading film critic Amy Taubin, cultural writer Glenn O'Brien, and innovative film curator Ed Halter in addition to an illuminating conversation between Nares and longtime friend and fellow artist Christopher Wool. Heavy volume, additional shipping fee may apply. .
