, An Authentic Account of the Conversion and Experience of a Negro
An Authentic Account of the Conversion and Experience of a Negro
London, T. Wilkins, c1795. Brochure/Pamphlet. An uncommon late eighteenth century pamphlet, detailing a conversation between an Englishman and an American slave, discussing religion and Christianity. An uncommon work. Collated from ESTC, complete. This work is a pamphlet. ESTC citation number T224026. Undated, ESTC states the date as circa 1795. Printed by T. Wilkins in London, as stated in the colophon. This is one of four separate editions published around the same time, the others printed in Maine, Vermont, and Spitalfields. The leaves have been trimmed at a slant. The drop-head title is 'An Authentic Account of the Conversion and Experience of a Negro&apos. Written anonymously, though it is often attributed to a Methodist author due to internal evidence. 'An Authentic Account of the Conversion and Experience of a Negro' is a pamphlet recounting an Englishman's encounter with a Christian slave in the state of New York, in the late eighteenth century. The author states that he met the man whilst visiting a plantation, and he fell into conversation with him. When the conversation started, he realised that the man was enamoured by the Bible, however mostly out of fear of his owner, a Quaker who had taught his slaves to read, rather than his own joy of pursuing religion. The pamphlet ends with a statement of the spiritual equality of all men in the eyes of God. Disbound. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are lightly age-toned and clean. A small amount of edge wear to the head of the first leaf. The leaves have been trimmed at a slant. Very Good Indeed . Ill.: None. Very Good Indeed .
