Lady Sydney [Owenson] Morgan, Woman; or Ida of Athens
Lady Sydney [Owenson] Morgan
Woman; or Ida of Athens
London, Longman, Hurst, Rees and Orme, 1809. First edition. Leather. A first edition of this novel from Victorian socialite, Lady Sydney Morgan. Sydney, Lady Morgan (nee Owenson; 25 December 1781 – 14 April 1859), was an Irish novelist. She was one of the most vivid and hotly discussed literary figures of her generation. She began her career with a precocious volume of poems. She collected Irish tunes, for which she composed the words, thus setting a fashion adopted with signal success by Thomas Moore. A reading of Germaine de Staël's novel Corinne (1807), set in Italy, convinced Owenson to write the novelized tract that Ida of Athens became. In her preface to it, she described Woman, or, Ida of Athens (1809) as an attempt to delineate perfected feminine character in its natural state and Greece as the perfect setting for doing so—although the final scenes (with Ida suddenly enriched) take place in London. In addition to its feminist concerns, the book includes long philosophical discussions on such Romantic topics as education, civil and religious freedom, and the moral influence of natural beauty. (ODNB) In four volumes Collated: Lacking pages 131-134 of the third volume. These pages were lacking at the time of rebinding. Rebound in sprinkled calf bindings. Externally, very smart. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright and quite clean, with just a few instances of light spotting. Very Good Indeed . Ill.: None. Very Good Indeed .
