Leipzig, Bernhard Tauchnitz, 1854. Leather. A beautifully bound quarter morocco edition of this best-selling novel, published by Tauchnitz in the same year as its first edition. A beautifully bound edition of American novelist Maria Susanna Cummins' extraordinarily popular novel. A sentimental novel, and female bildungsroman this was Cummins's first novel and was an immediate best-seller, selling 20,000 copies in twenty days. This book is volume 304 from the Tauchnitz 'Collection of British Authors' which started in 1842 and continued for almost a century. The collection eventually comprised of 5370 volumes.Christian Bernhard Tauchnitz founded his Leipzig publishing firm in 1837 at the age of 20. His specialism was publishing foreign language books, particularly English. He began his firm at a defining period for English literature, as popular authors were producing a wider range of work in differing genres and forms.Tauchnitz built a good reputation with many leading British and American authors which lead him to be the principal publisher of English Language books in continental Europe from 1840 to 1940. In some instances authors sent Tauchnitz their proofs in order for them to be published at the same time as the British publisher, or in some cases before. In nineteenth century Britain, an author's work could be published by several different publishing houses leading to the production of their novels in a variety of formats. By Tauchnitz owning the publishing rights to nearly all the leading British authors for the first time there was a consistent format. A Social Departure How Orthodocia and I Went Around the World by Ourselves
London, Chatto & Windus, 1893. Cloth. The third edition of Sara Jeannette Duncan's interesting travel work about her and Lily Lewis' experiences travelling on their own around the world, illustrated throughout. The third edition of this work. Illustrated with a frontispiece, with numerous in-text illustrations throughout. This work is a fictionalised account of the authors, Sara Jeannette Duncan, around the world trip with Lily Lewis. The two women embarked on their tour in 1888. At the time, the idea of women travelling alone was shocking and unconventional. The work is prominent for having the first description of the city of Vancouver in fiction. 'A Social Departure' was successful upon its publication, and was known for being cheerfully anecdotal, and for its wry humour, and close observation that showed Duncan's talent in journalism. Sara Jeannette Duncan was a Canadian journalist and author, who wrote for the 'Washington Post' where she was in charge of the current literature section. Lily Lewis was a journalist from Montreal. Illustrated by F. H. Townsend, a British illustrator. Townsend illustrated the second edition of 'Jane Eyre' by Charlotte Bronte in 1847. With thirty-four pages of publisher's adverts to the rear.
