I went to make money, sure; there was no other reason to go there. But I never was much for sloshing around in the ice and snow, looking for gold. My idea of making money in Alaska was to sit in a warm and cozy saloon – my saloon – and watch other people drink whiskey – my whiskey – and play a little cards on the side if the customers so desired. ”; Signed by Author. "Like only a few others, he (John Parrott) arrived in California already rich and successful. He had traded in hides and tallow in Mexico long before the gold rush. He had been named US Consul at Mazatlan in 1838. This honorary position brought prestige, but it did not include any pay. " (from San Mateo County Historical Society) While Parrott was given the respect that his wealth and position commanded, he was not without his flaws. It was known that he had fathered at least two children by different Mexican women. Some of his business dealings in those early days would have been called smuggling today. Nevertheless, when he arrived in San Francisco, Parrott was already established as a respectable and influential man. He became a banker and accumulated real estate in San Francisco and elsewhere. He invested in many different successful business ventures. He had originally been from The South, and he became a typical southern conservative businessman. Unlike some other San Franciscans of the time, Parrott never revealed the extent of his wealth, so it was rumored that he was richer than many of the others.". Very Good+ .

"Fort Pueblo was an adobe settlement and trading post built in 1842 by a group of independent traders at the ford of the Arkansas about half a mile west of the Fountain River. The exact location of the site is somewhat uncertain but is near First Street and Santa Fe Avenue in Pueblo, Colorado. The course of the Arkansas has changed by floods and the ford is gone, as is all surface evidence of the buildings at the fort. The builders of Fort Pueblo included George Simpson, son of a wealthy St. Louis merchant, who at 23 had set out in May 1841 on the Oregon Trail with a mule-drawn wagon. Simpson received a yearly remittance from his father throughout his life. Simpson was side-tracked from his westward journey at Fort Laramie when he was invited by William S. Williams to join a company of fur trappers.". Near Fine in Very Good dust jacket .

"Long before the state – or the country it is in – was even an idea, the route down and over the Colorado River in Marble Canyon was pioneered by the Native American tribes in the area, including the Hopi, according to ADOT's history of transportation in Arizona (link is external). According to the National Parks Service (link is external) , this crossing, where the Paria River flows into the Colorado, was used in 1864 by pioneer Jacob Hamblin. Known as the "Buckskin Apostle," Hamblin was a Mormon from Utah who explored much of northern Arizona in the 1860s and 1870s to find suitable locations for colonies. He's also the namesake of Jacob Lake, which sits at the junction of US 89A and State Route 67. Tensions with the natives would lead to the posting of guards to keep this important river crossing open." (Adot). Very Good .

MOYNAHAN, JAY
Poems of the Soiled Doves
San Jose, CA: Chickadee Publishing, 2002. 1st Edition; 1st Edition. Spiral bound. B&W Illustrations; This is a trade sized paperback book with cardstock covers and a spiral binding. The book is in Very Good+ condition and was issued without a dust jacket. The book is in clean bright condition. The text pages are clean and bright. "Bring up the intriguing subject of prostitution history in the American West, and you are sure to liven up a conversation. The thought of someone paying for sex diverts from societal and cultural ideals about how and when sex should be employed. It also brings forth a slew of questions, from how business was conducted to how the industry maintained its relationship with governments, big and small. In between are enough bawdy stories to make a sailor blush. Although prostitution in the West could indeed be gritty and dangerous, the act was sometimes viewed as a healthy and integral part of life. In the days of the mountain men rendezvous, certain American Indians offered the sexual favors of their wives and daughters to their white guests. For instance, the Assiniboines of the Great Northern Plains commonly lent out their daughters for sex, always in trade for goods. The more the girls brought in, the greater the respect for them and their families. Not all tribes, however, allowed such sexual license." (from TrueWest Magazine). Very Good+ .
