Contains descriptions of the voyages of Sir Francis Drake, Fernandez de Quiros, Samuel Wallis, James Cook, Marion Dufresne, George Vancouver, James Wilson, Frederic William Beechey and Theodore Laplace, as well as many others.Each volume is illustrated with a full plate frontispiece.From the library of Eric Kenneth Prentice Back. Kenn Back was a British meteorologist with the British Antarctic survey for many years. He spent eight winters in the Antarctic and is a descendent of Captain George Back. In addition, he served as base commander at Halley, Faraday and Rothera stations. His library collection was built over decades and highlights his love of polar exploration.A handy and scarce little set, providing a brief synopsis of all voyages made around the world between 1519 and 1832. In a quarter crushed morocco binding. Externally, generally smart, with some slight wear to the cloth-covered boards and bumping to the extremities resulting in a touch of loss to the cloth. Lacking the original half title, title page and table of contents.The geological volume.Written by Henri Filhol (1843-1902), a French scientist who served as naturalist and expedition doctor on the Transit of Venus Expedition of 1874 to Campbell Island, six-hundred kilometres south of New Zealand. The expedition sought to observe the transit of Venus, a rare astronomical occurrence. This expedition was one of six French expeditions dispatched.Illustrated with thirteen plates, including a number of magnificent colour plates depicting geological discoveries.A scarce example of this work. The first "petit edition" of this ten volume set, being the fourth impression. In the original French.The full account of the extraordinary voyage was published in thirty two volumes over ten years [1841-1855], this ten volume edition contains the complete history of the voyages of the Astrolabe and the Zélé.Rebound in an attractive quarter calf over facsimile boards in 1996 by Law Bindery, Melbourne. These volumes recount Dumont d'Urville's second and last expedition in the Astrolabe and the Zélé to the Antarctic and the Pacific, to Australia and New Zealand of 1837. This is regarded as one of the most successful expedition of the Great French scientific voyages. With the aim to explore the South Polar regions and the various islands in the Pacific. The expedition reached the ice pack of the South Polar Region in January of 1838 but was unable to penetrate it.These ten volumes include those published during Dumont d'Urville's lifetime; after he died in 1842, the work was continued by M. Slipcases are in a near fine condition. A faithful facsimile of Joseph Bank's original journals. These two volumes contain the journals of English botanist and natural scientist Sir Joseph Banks, who was onboard Captain James Cook's expedition to the South Pacific Ocean on HMS Endeavour, exploring Brazil, Tahiti, New Zealand, and Australia. During their time in Brazil, Banks made the first scientific description of the now common garden plant 'bougainvillea&apos.Though these journals primarily focus on the Endeavour voyage, Banks does also record notes on his life. Bank was an important naturalist, whose advice to King George III regarding Kew Gardens led to it being the world's leading botanical garden.  Volume I illustrated with a tipped-in frontispiece and twenty-six plates. Volume II illustrated with a tipped-in frontispiece.This edition with a commentary by A.
