¶ Ivor Waters (1907-1992) initial proposer and then General Secretary of the Chepstow Society, was an assiduous local historian as well as a poet. Author’s Presentation Copy, inscribed - ‘Arthur Clark, from Ivor Waters Sep. 1964.’ Valentine Morris (1727–1789) British landowner and politician, responsible for developing the picturesque woodland walks at Piercefield in the Wye Valley, and the Governor of St. Vincent from 1772 to 1779.

Some very light browning, marbled e.ps. and edges, ex.-libris John Cule, gilt ruled turn-ins, contemporary straight grained calf, some wear and discolouring to boards, rebacked in modern calf with gilt ruling and original gilt lettered label to spine.
¶ Charles Norris (1779–1858), topographical artist. ‘... For economic reasons, Norris taught himself to engrave, and in 1812 published [the above], which contained forty engravings both drawn and etched by himself. These accurate depictions of the medieval town remains were invaluable records of archaeological interest to scholars and historians ...’ ODNB. ‘... From a Welsh perspective, Norris was an artist who recorded buildings which have subsequently been lost, and is of importance as an antiquarian and landscape artist. The Etchings of Tenby, which was published as a book of prints, is a fine piece of research. His introduction emphasised that he was responsible for the whole work and that he was also producing other texts of a similar nature relating to Wales ...’ National Library of Wales.

London: Printed by Chas J. Clark, 1892-1936. 1st Ed. in bookform. 4 parts in 2 vols. Large 8vo. Folding map, double page colour plate of Arms, 4pp. of facsimile documents. Some very light browning, rebound in modern two tone half cloth, gilt lettering to spines.
¶ George Owen of Henllys (1552–1613). ‘... first appeared in book form in 1892 ... The second volume (1897) contained collections of papers relating to Pembrokeshire and to the barony of Cemais in particular, together with 'A catalogue and genelogie of the lordes of the baronye of Kemes seethence the conquests', accounts of suits in Star Chamber, the inquisitions post mortem of William Owen and George Owen, and 'The description of Milford Haven'. Part 3 (1906) comprised 'The dialogue of the government of Wales', which took place between Barthol, a German civil lawyer, and Demetus, recognizable as the author; 'Cruell lawes against Welshmen … made by Henrie the ffourth' following the failure of his attempts to quell the rebellion of Owain Glyn Dwr, laws that the author considered to be malicious; and 'A treatise of lordshipps marchers in Wales', and 'The description of Wales', which listed the lordships, towns, and features of each of the counties of south Wales. The editor stated that part 4 would include the remainder of the Welsh counties, 'The fragmentes of Wales' (1606–11), containing a collection of notes on the marcher lordships and the principality of Wales, and 'The treatise of marle', but he did not live to complete the work and the volume did not appear until 1936 ...’

Two of the three publications written towards the end of Pennant's life exemplify both his energy and the range of his writings ... The title of the third, [the above] by himself (1793), hints at Pennant's sense of humour. It is signed only by dotted lines to indicate the death of the author: it is for that reason that his History of the Parishes is signed ‘RESURGAM’, with its implication of literary resurrection ...’
