PERON, FRANCOIS; FREYCINET, LOUIS
Voyage de découvertes aux Terres Australes, Execute Sur Les Covettes Le Geographe, Le Naturaliste, et La Goelette Le Casuarina, Pendant Les annees 1800, 1801, 1803 et 1804. Historique: Tome Second.
Paris, Imprimerie Royale. 1816, First Edition. Full-Leather, 4to - over 9¾" - 12" tall. Book, Volume 2 only. xxxi, 471 pages, frontispiece, folding table. Original leather binding, marbled endpapers, leather a little rubbed, top corners bumped but overall a nice copy of one of the most important French scientific expeditions of the 19th century. This text volume covers the account of the expedition from the departure from Sydney to the return to Terre Napoleon (South Australia). From King Island Le Naturaliste returned to France. Le Geographe and Casuarina continued in company and charted Spencer and St. Vincent Gulf before returning to Mauritius via Timor. The account was written by the scientific officer, Francois Peron and after Peron's death in 1810 continued by the navigator Louis Freycinet. There is a beautiful frontispiece portrait of Francois Peron in this volume. It was engraved after a drawing by C.A. Lesueur made 15 hours before Peron's death. It shows Peron in a thick fur coat and hat working on volume 2 of this work. Behind him are scientific instruments and on his desk are volumes with manuscript notes, a copy of volume 1 of this work (published 1807) as well as a manuscript volume entitled "Histoire des Meduses" and a map showing Australia with the Southern coast called "Terre Napoleon". Good+.
