HMS Challenger was a 3 masted ship which sailed around the world in 1872 with a team of scientists aboard, and a crew of over 200. The British Government had sponsored her voyage to collect information on the oceans, minerals, the marine life, birds, animals, plants etc. The naturalists on board kept personal accounts of their travels. The official artist produced a well illustrated book, & 2 young officers kept their own journals with their observations on life aboard & on land, illustrated with their drawings. 288 pages including bibliography, and index. 28 colour plates, & about 170 b. / w. illustrations. 25cm. x 19cm. London. BBC Books,1997., The grandparents of Joanna Lumley went to Bhutan in the 1930's to present the king with the award of "Knight Commander of the Indian Empire." They kept diaries, wrote letters home, made drawings & sketches, and Joanna's grandmother filmed their travels on 35 mm. & 16mm. films. Labeled & carefully stored in 24 tins, sadly the films were deteriorating, until 1993 they were transferred to video tape.
