Original red cloth boards, discoloured, front inner joint a little cracked, spine lettering faded but a sound copy. Notable for being partly revised by George Nares, navigator and arctic explorer, the commander of the first vessel to pass through the Suez Canal, employing a night time ruse to cut in front of the French Imperial yacht. Although he received an official reprimand he was unofficially lauded by the Admiralty and promoted to captain. Contains much of interest on local geography, climate and trade.

Azores: A. Aruda, 1962. A collection of 18 black and white photographs, each 175 x 240 mm. on thin card mounts 370 x 450 mm. Mounts a little scuffed along the edges. A loose collection with captions in white ink in Portuguese. The operation shown here was owned by Dr Augusto Rebello Arruda, the firm [A. Arruda Pineapple Plantation] is still growing pineapples to this day on the island of St. Michael. Taken to celebrate the visit of the president of the Portuguese Republic, Admiral Thomas Americo and his wife in 1962. Pineapples in the Azores are grown under glass and this fine series of photographs illustrate the complete process: the gathering or materials, the erection and maintenance of large glasshouses, and the harvesting, packaging and exportation of the fruit> showing a blend of traditional and modern methods.

H.M.S. Warspite, Privately Printed, December, 1926. Folio. [3], 85 [printed rectos only]. Cloth backed boards, Very Good. Issued by the Chief of Staff of HM Mediterranean Fleet for officers of the fleet with notes on the various game available, how and where to find it. The areas covered are the Western Mediterranean, Adriatic and West Coast of Greece, the Aegean Eastern Mediterranean, Sea of Marmora and the Black Sea. The notes cover small game and big game including Ibex, wild pig, wild goats etc. partridge, quail, dove> the areas giving notes on town, station, game likely to be encountered, comments and what bags made or have been obtained i.e. Kavala "In September the local people organised a pig drive at which one pig was killed, no information as to whether it is any good to cook." Imbros "Best day 195 partridges and 15 various for 8 guns in the Valley of the Ridge."

Decorated cloth, gilt, cloth, worn, especially on the spine and old water stain on inner bottom corner margins of plates 24 - 28, not encroaching onto the printed image apart from very slightly on the final print. Scarce. Worldcat lists 4 copies: BL, St Andrews, Metropolitan Museum NY and the Getty Research Institute. Sotheby's sold a copy with a torn plate in 2002 for £1,300.

A Chinese Journalist in Britain.

[Hong Kong?], 1949. 4to. Wrappers, browned and chipped. Mostly Chinese text with two introductions in English. Many photographs of London and The British Industries Fair of 1949. Apparently signed by the author on the cover. No copies traced in on-line catalogues. Shum Choi-Sang [1922 - 2016] was one of the foremost figures in Hong Kong journalism, publisher of the Overseas Chinese Daily News founded by his father, and holding key posts in media organisations in Hong Kong. He was a philanthropist and local benefactor, receiving many honours from the British and Hong Kong governments.
