LEWIS Rev. John
The Church Catechism Explained. To which is added, a Section on Confirmation. SCARCE LINCOLNSHIRE PRINTING
H. Mozley, Gainsborough,, 1802. 12mo., wanting front free endpaper, some light age-staining, mid-nineteenth-century doodles on rear endpapers; contemporary full sheep, covers mildly scuffed and age-marked, hinges cracked (but binding entirely sound), a good, tight copy. First published in 1712, Lewis's 'Catechism' was swiftly recognised as a valuable aid to the teaching of scripture and liturgy. Dedicated to the SPCK, it seems to have become a standard tool of the newly-formed charity schools, where pupils were regularly assessed on their prowess in responding to the vicar's catechism. Symson's letters reveal that the text that guided their learning was Lewis's; one of three books (the others being the Bible itself and Allestree's 'The Whole Duty of Man') that White Kennett of the SPCK hoped would help turn young children into 'little garrisons against Popery'. (See Jones, 'The Charity School Movement', 1995, p.14). John Lewis (1675-1747) was educated at Exeter College Oxford, ordained in 1698 and served as vicar of Minster in Kent from 1709 until his death (interestingly, he is given on the title of the present edition as 'Minister of Margate in Kent'). His works include biographies of Wycliffe, Caxton and Pecock, valuable topographical studies of Kent and numerous contributions to religious history and bibliography. This Lincolnshire edition must be unusually scarce for we can find no reference to it in any standard source. J Mozley is the first recorded printer at Gainsborough where he established his press in 1778. H[enry] Mozley (the present printer) appears to have succeeded him sometime in the late 1790s. Not listed in BLPC or NLC.

MICANZIO] [Fulgenzio
La Vie de Pere Paul. Traduitte de l'Italien par F[rancois de] G[reverol] C[onseiller] A[u] P[arlement] D[e] B[ordeaux]. IN CONTEMPORARY BINDING
Jean de Ravenstein, Amsterdam,, 1663. 16mo., on laid paper, title and preliminaries very lightly age-soiled; most attractively bound in seventeenth century red full morocco, sides with triple frame border stopped at corners by rosettes all in gilt, back with five raised bands, second compartment framed and lettered in gilt, all other compartments framed in gilt, all edges gilt, marbled endpapers, one corner lightly bruised, joints very lightly rubbed, short split in upper joint (but binding entirely sound), a very good, clean copy of a scarce work in wholly unrestored period binding. Scarce life of Paolo Sarpi by his disciple Fulgenzio Micanzio (1570-1654). Sarpi (1552-1623), Venetian scholar, church reformer and patriot, was the author of several works, of which the most important is his 'Istoria del Concilio Tridentio', first published in Italian (London, 1619) with an English translation by Brent in the following year and a French edition by Elzevier in 1661. It was his approach to treat ecclesiastical history in the manner of politics; 'a kind of Anglican picture of the debates and decisions' (Hay). His contempt for the Curia made him popular with Protestants; Milton refers to him as 'the great unmasker'. Prudently, Sarpi never acknowledged his authorship of the work, despite the efforts of Louis II to extract his admission. Willems, p.217, n.876.
