Sm., 4to., First Edition [Sole Edition], with 20 fine chromolithographed plates finished by hand, illuminated borders and initials, wanting front free endpaper, some moderate spotting throughout; contemporary full burgundy calf, boards elaborately blocked in blind and lettered in gilt, back with four raised bands, bevelled boards, gilt edges, very neatly recased, a very good, firm copy. 'This book was completed for Longman Brown Green and Longmans the last day of October at the Studio of Lewis Gruner in the Year of our Lord 1847'. The plates by Humphreys are illuminated by Gruner, 'and probably printed in the establishment of Owen Jones, whose style the illuminations resemble' (McLean: Victorian Book Design, p.92).

Printed for Thomas Parkhurst and Jonathan Robinson,, 1677. 8vo., First Edition, on laid paper, with title in red and black, title mildly age-browned; strongly bound in nineteenth century half calf, marbled boards, expertly rebacked with old backstrip laid down, leather label lettered in gilt, red sprinkled edges, a very good, bright, crisp copy. With the nineteenth century bookplate of Charles Noel Welman on front paste-down. With a lengthy and neatly calligraphed provenance (1860) by Welman on two preliminaries, eighteenth century MS signature on title verso and earlier MS notes on rear free endpaper. A crisp copy of what is arguably Hanmer's best-known work, though authorship has been attributed sometime to others. Jonathan Hanmer (1606-1687), ejected minister, and lecturer at Barnstaple from 1646 to 1662, was father to John Hanmer, an ancestor of the Welman family as outlined in the inscription. RARE.

This scarce edition is, we believe, the first issue with the title 'Dictionary'. Henderson under the Royal-Exchange,, 1758. 12mo., on laid paper; neat contemporary inscription on (blank) leaf following front free endpaper; handsomely bound in contemporary full calf, sides blocked with an elaborate frame panel in gilt including eagles, thistles and flowers, the whole stopped at corners by enhanced crowns, back gilt with five raised bands tooled in gilt, all compartments tooled in gilt, all edges gilt, gilt doublures and dentelles, marbled endpapers, very neatly rebacked with old backstrip laid down, one corner lightly bruised else a most attractive copy in period binding. With the half-title; leaves C9-11 clipped at upper outer corner with minimal loss of text. The work comprises 'Two Discourses' [with] (separately paginated) 'Prayers and Meditations relating to the Holy Communion' [with] (unpaginated) 'The Church Service'. Extremely scarce, especially in period binding in this condition. A SPLENDID CRISP, CLEAN COPY IN CONTEMPORARY BINDING.
