With the elaborate nineteenth-century personal pictorial bookplate of Edward Lewton Penny on front paste-down of first volume. The binding is signed on rear paste-downs. Prideaux's classic account was first published 1715-1717. VERY SCARCE, ESPECIALLY IN THIS CONDITION.

First edition of Sherlock's first collection of sermons, and forerunner of a well-known series of 'discourses' published across the late eighteenth century. THIS COPY WAS FORMERLY IN THE LIBRARY OF THE 3rd MARQUESS OF LONDONDERRY AND BEARS HIS FINE ENGRAVED ARMORIAL BOOKPLATE ON FRONT PASTE-DOWN. The bookplate shows the arms of Londonderry and those of his second wife Frances Anne Emily, daughter of Sir Henry Vane-Tempest. A small, neat, contemporary signature 'Henry Vane' appears on title. A PLEASING COPY WITH NOTABLE PROVENANCE.

Dedicated to Hugh Jones, Archdeacon of Essex, Soames' history was first published in 1835. The present edition introduces italic type for Saxon terms to aid reference and comprehension. A most attractive copy in wholly unrestored contemporary binding.

With 3pp publisher's advertisement at end. This copy was formerly in the library of one George Humphreys. It carries a lengthy signed holograph inscription (dated 1771) on front paste-down, and a charming verse (dated 29 September 1771) on rear paste-down: 'George is my Name, Earth is my Nation, Heaven is my Dwelling Place and this is my Generation'.
