"According to Polhem's autobiography, the event that marked the beginning of his career was the successful repair of the unfinished medieval (16th century) astronomical clock designed by Petrus Astronomus at Uppsala Cathedral, which had remained unfinished and broken for more than a century. In 1690 Polhem was appointed to improve upon the current mining operations of Sweden. His contribution was a construction for lifting and transporting ore from mines, a process that was rather risky and inefficient at the time. The construction consisted of a track system for lifting the ore, as opposed to wires; the construction was powered entirely by a water wheel. Human labor needed was limited to loading the containers. Being new and revolutionary, word of Polhem's work reached King Charles XI of Sweden who was so impressed with the work that he assigned him to improve Sweden's main mining operation; the Falun Mine in Dalarna. Future development of equipment brought about the discovery that he could record frequencies as high as 20,000 hertz, which he demonstrated at the 1949 Audio Fair in New York. Shortly after, Sounds of Our Times, later called Cook Records, was born. Cook Records collected many different sounds and was mostly aimed at the devoted high-fidelity listener. In order to encourage listening, he put out many albums full of everyday sounds, such as Voice of the Sea, an album of ocean sounds and Eye of the Storm, recorded during a thunderstorm." It is used to detect and track aircraft, ships, spacecraft, guided missiles, motor vehicles, map weather formations, and terrain. A radar system consists of a transmitter producing electromagnetic waves in the radio or microwaves domain, a transmitting antenna, a receiving antenna (often the same antenna is used for transmitting and receiving) and a receiver and processor to determine properties of the objects. Radio waves (pulsed or continuous) from the transmitter reflect off the objects and return to the receiver, giving information about the objects' locations and speeds. " (from Wikipedia). TURNER, WILLIAM W.
How to Avoid Electronic Eavesdropping and Privacy Invasion
Boulder, CO: Paladin Press, 1972. Revised Edition. Paperback. B&W Illustrations; This is a trade paperback book. The book is in Very Good+ condition and was issued without a dust jacket. The book and its contents are in mostly clean, bright condition. The rear cover has a couple of small spots of ground-in dirt. The text pages are clean and bright. "Turner joined the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) in 1951. He worked for the FBI for ten years but grew increasingly concerned with the way J. Edgar Hoover ran the organization. Turner became convinced that Hoover was placing too much emphasis on the dangers of the American Communist Party. Instead, he felt he should be using more resources to tackle organized crime. In 1961 Turner was dismissed from the FBI. He hired Edward Bennett Williams and sued the FBI but lost. However he did manage to get anti-Hoover testimony by other agents into the record. Turner became a journalist. In 1963 he investigated the assassination of President John F. Kennedy and concluded that he was the victim of a conspiracy. Later he worked with Jim Garrison, the district attorney of New Orleans. Turner and Garrison argued that a group of right-wing activists, including Guy Bannister, David Ferrie, Carlos Bringuier and Clay Shaw were involved in a conspiracy with the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) to kill Kennedy. Turner and Garrison claimed this was in retaliation for his attempts to obtain a peace settlement in both Cuba and Vietnam." (Spartacus Educational Website). Very Good+ .

WILLIAMS, ARCHIBALD, Engineering Wonders of the World 3 Volumes
WILLIAMS, ARCHIBALD
Engineering Wonders of the World 3 Volumes
London, England: Thomas Nelson & Sons, 1909. Trade Edition. Hardcover. B&W and Color Illustrations; Three volume set, with leather spines and corners, and heavy cloth covered boards. The set is in Very Good- condition overall, and is lacking dust jackets. The spine ends and corners of the book covers have rubbing, wear and several tears and chips. The text pages are generally clean and bright. Volume two has a tear to frontispiece top edge. Each volume has a number colored plates ( 7, 6,6) along with numerous black and white illustrations. The inner hinges of all three volumes have pulling. "Archibald Williams contributed a small number of pieces to boy’s magazines and wrote a number of books about engineering, manufacture and also exploration. He was born 14 July 1871, the son of the Rev. Daniel Rowland Williams of Bowers Gifford, Essex. He was a BA of Oxford, and a Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society. He was married to Florence. The 1901 census records him as living at Bowers Gifford, single, and a school tutor. Williams died on his birthday, 14 July 1934. It is not known if he was survived by any family. Williams was an occasional contributor to Pearson’s Magazine, The Strand Magazine and boys magazines. Two of his books were published in Hungarian. Many of his books were reprinted: the earliest dates are noted here. The brief notes about his life do not do justice to the quality of his work for he was a highly competent technical journalist specialising in books for boys. The ‘Romance of …’ series he published from 1903 with C Arthur Pearson introduced youngsters to the very latest engineering and technical developments. How It Works (1906) , How It Is Made (1907) and The Wonders Of Mechanical Ingenuity (1910) dealt with the practicalities of mechanism and manufacture." (from the BearAlley blog). Very Good- .
