Dit boek wil een gids zijn voor wie in oude archiefstukken woorden tegenkomt die hij/ zij niet kent. Veel woorden komen uit het Frans of het Latijn zoals abalieneren, denarius of denier, iniquiteijt, onsel, ooistal, lubbe, Sint-Stevensdag, sommierlyck, sixe, slatten, traniels, tribuyt, wouwer, enz. Afkortingen zijn in oude teksten legio zoals sr (sieur), dcus (dictus), noe (nomine), q.l. (quod libet). Cijfers in rekeningen en data zijn voor velen moeilijk, zoals xvj (16) of xcj (91). Ook doubletten van plaatsnamen zijn opgenomen, zoals Tirlemont naast Tienen. Sommige dubbele vormen zijn niet meer officieel in gebruik, maar helpen de lezers bij de identificatie van gemeenten in oude geschriften. Een voorbeeld is Bisschopswilder, nu enkel bekend als Villers l'Evêque, maar vroeger in doopregisters ook in gebruik als Villare Episcopi. Zo vindt de lezer in de lijst naast Scherpenheuvel ook de Franse variant Montaigu en de Latijnse vertaling Aspricollis of Mons Acutus. Interessant zijn de Latijnse woorden. Als een stamboomonderzoeker in Hoeleden bij een voorouder leest occisus a gallis (gedood door Fransen), wil hij graag de betekenis kennen. Niet alle verlatijnste familienamen zijn vlug herkenbaar, zoals De Palude voor Uytebroeck, De Monte voor Vanden Berghe, De Tilia voor Vander Linden, Andree voor Driessens, zonder te spreken van het geheimzinnige De Repagulo, de verlatijnsing van Vander Hameyde of jawel Viruli voor Mennekens.
