Nottingham, Boots Pure Drugs Co Ltd, 1931. 24pp, including 8 b&w photos, map. String-tied wraps, 25x19. Very good copy. Lord Trent (Jesse Boot), 1850-1931, was founder of Boots. Gives information on the early days. The firm was a notable benefactor and well known for looking after the workforce, as well as promoting modern architecture. Interesting memorial publication, scarce.

London, Delco c.1924 24pp, ills and technical details throughout. 28x23, stapled illustrated wraps. Spine worn and rubbed, with some loss, contents good. Delco were owned by General Motors, and are best known for electric equipment for cars. This catalogue is on the domestic generator and battery installations for factories and country houses, and for farms and other areas without access to the electrical grid. The main battery factory was in Manchester.

Catalogue of the many different shapes and sizes of brass materials manufactured by this famous Greenwich company, one of the largest employers on the penisular for nearly 100 years.

The company sold a wide range of domestic and commercial products; bought by the Redlands Group its name disappears from companies house in the early 1980s, but lives in for UK law students in a widely cited case relating to wrongful dismissal of an employee.

About half the catalogue is products for the home, the rest being agriculture products, garden furniture etc. Interesting.

Hawkins Hostess Trolley Range and Other Household Appliances (12 assorted leaflets and 4 pamphlets)

London 1930s-1980s 12 assorted leaflets, some in bw and some in full colour, 4 pamphlets, c 40pp each 29x21 to 10x13, various sizes folded leaflets, 21x15 stapled pamphlets Some wear, one leaflet has been annotated in ink, another has deleted product lines noted in pen, good thus. LG Hawkins was established in London in the early years of the twentieth century, and by the time it was bought out by Pye in 1939 was a well known supplier of a range of household electrical goods, including the 'Hawkins Hostess' heated trolley. Pye bought Ekco Ltd, and merged its Hawkins operation with Ekco's appliances division as Ecko Hawkins. The Hostess Trolley was marketed under the shared brand for a while, and then eventually as just as Ekco product. Pye was in turn bought by Philips in 1986 and the Hostess Trolley rebranded accordingly.From the 1930s to the 1980s the advertising pitch was the same - the Hostess Trolley offered elegant and convenient dining ease to aspirational families. The smiles were the same, just the clothes changed!

New Light on Farm Problems

Several of the cartoons are by Lawrie Siggs, best known for his work in Punch.

A range of manufacturers leaflets, extolling the virtues of their wares. This period was marked by a focus on freeing up time from the drudgery of housework for women in particular and the emphasis is on their convenience. The Kenwood Chef leaflet features recipes and suggestions for what the busy housewife could do with her new 'servant', and which would 'make her reputation' (the recipe for ham savoury if served today would indeed make someone's reputation...!)

Spine text faded and grubby, corners of boards a bit worn, acid (?) damage to corners of last dozen or so pages with loss, not affecting illustrations but losing a little of the index, large section of rear board missing. Fair thus. Shades, reflectors, fittings for indoor and outdoor use, pendants etc. Many of the domestic designs are still essentially electric versions or gas lighting designs, but the external lamps are beginning to show signs of the design opportunities offered by electric lighting.
