GOULD, STEPHEN JAY
The Hedgehog, the Fox and the Magister's Pox:
Jonathan Cape Ltd. 2003. (ISBN: 9780224063098). Hardcover, 23.4 x 15.4 x 3.2 red. Condition good. Isbn 0-224-06309-X,022406309X. Mending and Minding the Misconceived Gap Between Science and the Humanities. Though this final book is not the most accessible of Stephen Jay Gould's meditations on science and culture, it is a complex and revealing look at one of the late paleontologist's great passions: the unity of human endeavour. The titular hedgehog and fox refer to the classic dichotomy of persistence opposed to agility of thought, which Gould uses as a backbone in comparing, contrasting and balancing science and the humanities. Unlike many scientists, he does not consider humanities (nor religion) to be inferior to his discipline. Drawing liberally from Renaissance and Scientific Revolution sources, Gould shows that the perceived differences in the two cultures are mostly false. Readers of EO Wilson's Consilience will find many similarities here, though Gould emphatically rejects Wilson's conclusion that reductionism is an appropriate way to unite the two cultures and offers examples of when such an approach might fail. If we discover that a majority of human cultures have favored infanticide under certain conditions, and that such a practice arose for good Darwinian reasons, shall we then claim that we have resolved the question of the rightness of such a practice with a "yea"? This volume is presented by its editor almost unchanged from the manuscript Gould had finished shortly before his death. The result is a book with such unedited detail that its dense blend of history and philosophy is at times overwhelmingly difficult. Nevertheless, Gould's deeply held conviction that human understanding comes from every one of our cultural efforts shines through. In characteristic form, Gould weaves the ideas of some of Western society's greatest thinkers, from Bacon to Galileo to E.O. Wilson, with the uncelebrated ideas of lesser-known yet pivotal intellectuals. He uses the ideas of these men to undo an assumption born in the 17th century and continuing to this day, that science and the humanities stand in opposition. In the title and throughout the book he uses a metaphor drawn from Erasmus and a more obscure 16th century scholar named Konrad Gesner (an illustrator of the animal kingdom) of the hedgehog - who goes after one thing at a measured pace, systematically investigating all; the Fox - skilled at many things, intuitive and fast; and the magister's pox - a censure from the Catholic Church involved in Galileo's downfall: a metaphor which illustrates the different ways of responding to knowledge - from a scientific, humanistic and fearful way. He argues that in fact each of them should borrow from each other and thereby improve their own given disciplines. Gould then delves into a fiery discussion of the notion of consilience first put forward by E.O. Wilson, which argues that scientific method (specifically reductionism) is supreme, uniting all the disciplines. Wilson holds that everything in nature is possible to predict - mathematically. Gould holds that in fact events in nature - including evolution - were and are random, each event contingent on the next. Used: Acceptable.

HARDISON, JR. O. B.
Disappearing Through the Skylight: Culture and Technology in the Twentieth Century
Penguin. 1990. (ISBN: 9780140115826). Paperback, 7 x 5 x 1 inches. Paperback - 1990 - fair condition - - used books, secondhand books, out of print books, hard to find books, for sale, second-hand books, college books, student books, nonfiction, first edition, exlibrary books sold, signed copies, non-fiction books delivered world wide. 0-14-011582-X. Isbn 014011582X. Armed with the opinion that technological and cultural trends are negating history and the idea of humanity itself, Hardison takes readers on a tour of the modern age. Described by PW as "by turns incisive and glib," this volume offers "engaging discussions of all manner of topics, from the British cracking of the Germans' Enigma code in WW II to automobiles as 'thin-steel sculptures.' " Illustrated. Hardison, English professor (Georgetown), Shakespearean scholar, and amateur physicist, is always entertaining and often thought-provoking, as in Entering the Maze: Identity & Change in Modern Culture (Oxford Univ. Pr. 1981); here, he is very successful at placing the advent of technology within the context of our century. Through witty and elegantly written chapters on art, architecture, music, and poetry, he weaves a cogent and coherent theory on how the world left the domain of philosophers and classical artists and entered that of mathematicians and computer scientists. When our capacity to envision nature as solid and tangible "disappeared through the skylight," our ability to envision what nature and science consist of was irrevocably altered. Of the current titles that seem to address this subject, this is by far the best: Hardison illustrates, cleverly and vividly, by example. Challenging but highly readable, the book should spark discussion. Fascinating and well conceived. Used: Acceptable.

HEALEY, K.
Tyne-Tees-Mersey: A Survey of the Limited Stop Pool Services in the North of England (Prestige Series)
plum, Venture Publications Ltd. 2000. (ISBN: 9781898432234). Paperback. Condition good, clean. A Survey of the Limited Stop Pool Services in the North of England 1929 to 1975 by Keith Healey and Philip Battersby The "Tyne Tees Mersey" title did not appear on the sides of the buses, yet the name spoke to countless thousands of travellers as they looked at posters and advertisements, perused timetable leaflets, and went to book their coach tickets. In this respect the Tyne Tees Mersey services resembled those of "Associated Motorways" which operated through the busy Cheltenham interchange for so many years. The services linking the Tyne, Tees and Mersey areas via Leeds and Manchester were provided by the Limited Stop Pool, a group of six principal operators working jointly. North Western and Lancashire United were at the south-western end of the routes, West Yorkshire and Yorkshire Woollen in the middle, and Northern and United at the top. The companies were thus strategically placed to operate across some of England's most densely populated regions, yet the nine-hour pre-motorway journey from Liverpool to Newcastle also took in the wild Pennine moorlands and the vast bucolic landscapes of the North Riding of Yorkshire. The Tyne Tees Mersey may have lacked the lustre of the fast express services to the capital, the holiday south-west or Scotland, but what it lacked in glamour was more than compensated for by its interest, variety and sheer intensity of service. Known to the industry as "The Limited Stop", this operation was a vital entity in its own right, and not a mere adjunct to the history of any one company. Here, for the first time, its own story is comprehensively told. The authors of this new study take the reader from early precursors to the inauguration in 1929, and through a series of developments until the names "Tyne Tees Mersey" and "Limited Stop" disappeared into the National Express network in the 1970s. This volume is thoroughly researched and comprehensively illustrated but is far more than a picture history, and well deserves a place on your bookshelf. Good.
