This is an extremely rare copy of this text by Andrea Bacci, an Italian philosopher, doctor and writer. This book is regarding "the nature and goodness" of waters of the Teuere, Rome, Nile, Po, Arno and other rivers. Good (Boards show wear, foxing, corners are bending; spine has a few small holes in the surface material at the bottom; there is minor soiling on the spine strip; there is discoloration at the top of the spine strip; cloth binding material at the bottom of the spine has pulled away from the text block, but has not detached; covers have some discoloration; there is a stamp from a bookstore and one from a personal library on the inside of the front cover; text block is darkened and shows scuffing and smudging; title page to first page is heavily worn, foxed and age-toned, and is pulling away slightly from the text block at the bottom; there is an almost imperceptible worm hole that runs from page 215 through the end of the text block; pages are lightly to moderately foxed; final eight pages are pulling away slightly at the bottom and are more foxed than the rest; ribbon bookmark is aged and worn significantly at the end.) .

Folding diagram facing pp. 1, illustration facing p. 14, pagination goes from 96 to (97-98), (99-100), (101-102), (103-104) for some reason, a few tables throughout. Baron Ferdinand Paul Wilhelm von Richthofen was a German traveler, geographer, and geologist with a specialty in Geomorphology. The internet reveals he left on his first journey of exploration in 1860, joining a Prussian expedition to East Asia and on to Java, Siam, Burma, and finally California in 1863. In 1868 he left for Asia again, exploring parts of China and Japan, and returning to Germany in 1872. He visited 7 major locations in China over 2 years, sending reports back for each which were printed and disseminated individually before being published as a collected work. His letters report on Hunan, the Han River, Honan and Shansi, Chekiang and Nganhwei, Nanking and Chinkiang, Muslims in Kansu, Sichuan, and Chihli. Mongolia and Shansi, with a focus on geography, economics, and natural resources. He later published "China: Ergebnisse eigener Reisen und darauf gegründeter Studien." from 1877-1885, which became his signature work on these areas. This book, a preliminary to that, was published in Shanghai and is quite scarce. And expanded edition of this title was published in 1903. Original boards with new matching spine and minor restorations, retaining the bookplate of Wilson S. Howell. This may be the same Howell wjho worked for Thomas Edison in Menlo Park. The Bookplate has the initials D.S.W. in the lower left corner, partially concealed. There is also a oval blindstamp of the Brooklyn Institute of Arts in the upper right of the title-page, with a very light red "Cancelled" tamp over-top. VG, Bookplates inside front and rear cover, oval blindstamp, new spine with gilt lettering.
