MUNRO
Nieuwe Plattegrond Der Stad Rotterdam, Gelegen Aan De Rivieren De Maas En De Rotte, Met Al De Publique- En Kerkelijke Gebouwen Binnen De Zelve Staande, Als Mede Deszelfs Havens, Vaarten, Straaten, Steegen En Gangen; [Etc.]...Rotterdam Wall-Map By Munro.
Amsterdam, Covens & Mortier. 1800, First and Only. Later Portfolio, Atlas Folio - over 23" - 25" tall. Book, One Of Only A Hundred Printed!! A quite large and very detailed, [Scale 1:1500] unmounted wall map, in 4 sheets, kept in a [later] large folio 1/2 leather folder, with manuscript title label. A.Munro surveyed this map in the years 1796-97 at the order on the Rotterdam Towns Council: " Volgens Resolutie Van Wethouders En Raaden Der Stad Rotterdam, In Dato 1 Februarij 1796 Geheel Opnieuw Gemeeten En Geteekend Door A.Munro, Fabrijk En Lantmeeter Van Schieland In Den Jaare 1796 en 1797" . The idea was to produce the number of 250 copies, but it proved to be impossible to find a bookseller/printer to produce this map..because of the enormous costs. Because of this, they asked the well known, Amsterdam based Company Covens & Mortier, to produce the map, in return, Covens & Mortier obtained the legal rights for this map, if they would produce 100 copies of it, for the City Council as a payment. Then, the City Council opened a subscribers register, and when the subscription number should exceed the number of 250, the production would start. But, in the end, only 60 people suscribed for this monumental map(!) thus, Covens & Mortier declined the production. In a newly negociated contract they printed the first 50 copies, as late as januari of the year 1801 , and a further 50 copies in december, 1801. They could be obtained for 10,- guilders a piece , for uncoloured copies. Our copy seems to be one of the extremely rare"First Proof" used as presentation copies ,executed in the finest possible, wash colouring, printed on fine moulded paper. Apart for the 2 fierce Lions as shieldholders, at bottom centre, this well engraved map gives us a list of streets, carrying a good 260 numbers and a lenghty list of Gates, Churches, Bridges, Markets Etc. both in a well designed cartouche. NOTE: This very example was sold by the Rotterdam Towns Archivist Mr. H.C.Hazewinkel, in the early 1960-Ths a "Duplicat " to a well known Rotterdam Antiquary who hung on to it till the present day ,planning a re-issue, as he did with the famous "De Vou" map from 1690, but abandoned the idea. See at length, P.Ratsma Historische Plattegronden van Nederlandse Steden, Dl. 2 "Rotterdam" pp. 59-60. An"Roterodamum Illustratum, (1868) Vol. I, pp.109-111 number 50, as well as the lenghty "Notes" as mentioned under the letter "E" pp. 26-39 from the appendix, citing the official communication between the city council and the pubishers. A stunning cop y of a very fine and rare , most decorative map. Very Good/No Jacket.
