The evangelical divine of the Church of England William Romaine (1714-1795) authored works which were once highly thought of by the evangelicals. Ordained a priest in 1738, he was engaged in a controversy over the views expressed by William Warburton. He served as chaplain to Daniel Lambert, the Lord Mayor of London, preaching at St. Paul's Cathedral. After undergoing an evangelical conversion in 1748, he preached evangelical doctrine to large crowds in opposition to the church hierarchy. He was, for a short time, Gresham Professor of Astronomy at Gresham College. A noted Hebrew scholar, Romaine published a revision of Mario di Calasio's Hebrew dictionary and concordance. Good .

Collyer, Robert. (1823-1912). English-born American Unitarian clergyman who supported the abolition of slavery and women's suffrage.
Slip of Paper Inscribed with a Quotation and Signed by Unitarian Pastor Robert Collyer Who Supported the Abolition of Slavery and Women's Suffrage.
Circa [1880]. [1880]. - A slip of paper, 2-3/8 inches high by 4-3/8 inches wide, is inscribed & signed in black ink: "Let us thank God for the Saxon Grit / Robert Collyer". The paper is mounted on a piece of cream-colored card of approximately the same size. The card is unevenly cut & both paper & card are slightly rippled from the mounting. Good. "Saxon Grit" is the title of an 1880 poem by Collyer about the Norman conquest of England, in which the phrase recurs in each verse. Robert Collyer [1823-1912] was an English-born American Unitarian clergyman. He became a Methodist minister in England in 1849. Emigrating to The United States in the following year, he found employment as a hammer maker in Pennsylvania and soon began preaching on Sundays while still employed at the factory. His earnest, rugged, simple style of oratory won him great popularity, but his advocacy for the antislavery cause, then frowned upon by the Methodist authorities, aroused opposition. He was tried for heresy and his license was revoked. Continuing as an independent preacher, he joined the Unitarian Church in 1859. In 1860 he organized and became pastor of the Unity Church, the second Unitarian Church in Chicago. The church grew to become one of the strongest Unitarian churches in the West and Collyer was regarded as one of the foremost pulpit orators in the country. He left Chicago in 1879 and became pastor of the Church of the Messiah [now renamed the Community Church] in New York City. In 1883 he was a featured speaker at the convention of the American Woman Suffrage Association where he spoke movingly about his deceased wife and their struggles over "the woman question". Good .

Potter, William J. (1829-1893). Radical minister in the American Free Thought tradition. He was influenced by the Transcendentalists and later, Darwin.
Autograph Letter Signed by the Radical Minister William J. Potter Regarding a Lecture He Will Give.
New Bedford, MA: December 30, 1874. 1874. New Bedford, MA: December 30, 1874. 1874. Very good. - Octavo, 8 inches high by 5 inches wide. Two pages penned on the first and third pages of a folded sheet. Over 150 words penned by the radical minister William J. Potter addressed to a Mrs. Richmond regarding arrangements for a lecture he will give at the meeting of her club. After mentioning that she should expect him on the 5 p.m. train, as that is the earliest he can leave Boston for Lowell that day, he expresses his pleasure that she likes his latest essay: "I am glad if you have found so much to enjoy in my essay on 'The New Protestantism'" and, though he would be tempted to read it at the lecture he had "thought of reading a paper which I call 'Two Views of Tradition, - The Ecclesiastical & the Scientific.' And on the whole this seems to me more appropriate." Signed "Wm. J. Potter". In a postscript, Potter suggests that if Mrs. Richmond's not fully recovered her health by then, it might be better to postpone the meeting and he would then come later in the season. Folded several times for mailing with a small piece out from the bottom front corner of the second page.

The Unitarian minister and Freethinker William James Potter (1829-1893) was a radical minister in the American Free Thought tradition of his era. Influenced by the Transcendentalists, he was later strongly influenced by Charles Darwin. Moving from his Quaker foundations to Unitarian Christianity and then towards free religion, Potter was a founder with David Atwood Wasson of the Free Religious Association (1867- 1920). Potter drafted the Free Religious Association's constitution and eventually served as it's president: "The new society would dedicate itself to the emancipation of religion from the thralldom of irrational and traditional authorities." From 1859 to 1892, he served as the minister of the Unitarian Church in New Bedford (First Congregational Society). Potter was the poet Conrad Aiken's grandfather. In his autobiography "Ushant", Aiken says that his entire life was devoted to the ideas and work of Potter. Very good .
