ESPOSITO, JOHN L. (ED)
The Oxford History of Islam
NY: Oxford University Press, 1999. 0195107993. 1st Edition. Second Printing. Hard Cover. ISBN: 0195107993. Publisher's full blue cloth, white lettering on spineLavishly illustrated with over 300 pictures, including more than 200 in full color, The Oxford History of Islam offers the most wide-ranging and authoritative account available of the second largest--and fastest growing--religion in the world. John L. Esposito, Editor-in-Chief of the four-volume Oxford Encyclopedia of the Modern Islamic World, has gathered together sixteen leading scholars, both Muslim and non-Muslim, to examine the origins and historical development of Islam--its faith, community, institutions, sciences, and arts. Beginning in the pre-Islamic Arab world, the chapters range from the story of Muhammad and his Companions, to the development of Islamic religion and culture and the empires that grew from it, to the influence that Islam has on today's world. The book covers a wide array of subjects, casting light on topics such as the historical encounter of Islam and Christianity, the role of Islam in the Mughal and Ottoman empires, the growth of Islam in Southeast Asia, China, and Africa, the political, economic, and religious challenges of European imperialism in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, and Islamic communities in the modern Western world. In addition, the book offers excellent articles on Islamic religion, art and architecture, and sciences as well as bibliographies. Events in the contemporary world have led to an explosion of interest and scholarly work on Islam. Written for the general reader but also appealing to specialists, The Oxford History of Islam offers the best of that recent scholarship, presented in a readable style and complemented by a rich variety of illustrations.. Some pencil underlining, minor rubbing on cover and edges, else fine; tight, square, and clean. A heavy books (six pounds) - additional shipping may apply. VERY GOOD/VERY GOOD. GONET, REV. FATHER JOANNE BAPTISTA (JEAN-BAPTISTE GONET), Clypeus Theologiae Thomisticae Contra Novos Ejus Impugnatores (Volumes 1 and 3, Only, of 5)
GONET, REV. FATHER JOANNE BAPTISTA (JEAN-BAPTISTE GONET)
Clypeus Theologiae Thomisticae Contra Novos Ejus Impugnatores (Volumes 1 and 3, Only, of 5)
Venice: Typographia Balleoniana, 1772. Eighth Edition. First Printing. Hard Cover. Quarter bound in brown leather over marbled boards, spines in five compartments separated by gilt borders, gilt lettering in two compartments. In Latin. Volume One contains, inter alia, his "De Natura et Attributis Divinis." Volume Three contains, inter alia, "De Beatitudine, et Actibus Humanis." Jean-Baptiste Gonet (born about 1616 at Béziers, in the province of Languedoc – died 24 January 1681 at Béziers) was a French Dominican theologian. His principal work is the "Clypeus theologiae thomisticae contra novos ejus impugnatores" (16 vols, Bordeaux, 1659–69). From 1669 to 1681 no less than nine editions of this work appeared, the latest is that of Paris 1875. Shortly before his death he published his "Manuale thomistarum", which is an abridgment of his larger work. As a theologian and academic disputant Gonet ranks among the most prominent figures of his time. An ardent defender and exponent of the teaching of Thomas Aquinas and an illustrious representative of Neo-Thomism, he set forth the traditional teaching of his school with clearness and skill, with some bitterness against the representatives of different views. Thomistic Philosophy is inspired by the philosophical methods and principles used by Thomas Aquinas (1224/5-1274), a Dominican Friar and Theologian, in his explanation of the Catholic faith. Aquinas, who is most renowned for his "Five Ways of Proving the Existence of God," believed that both faith and reason discover truth, a conflict between them being impossible since they both originate in God. Believing that reason can, in principle, lead the mind to God, Aquinas defended reason's legitimacy, especially in the works of Aristotle. The philosophy of Aquinas continues to offer insights into many lingering problems in Metaphysics, the Philosophy of Mind, Philosophy of Religion and Ethics. The spines and covers are moderately rubbed, the corners bumped and worn, but the text blocks are tight and square, the hinges are strong, the pages supple. Large, heavy books - additional shipping may apply. VERY GOOD.. Folio 13" - 23" tall. Very Good with No dust jacket as issued .
