Anselmus' taalkundige valstrik. Een meertalig essay

2008. Paperback. Pp: 256. Voor de benedictijner wijsgeer Anselmus (1033-1109), aartsbisschop van Canterbury, kwam het geloof altijd op de eerste plaats. Eerst en vooral het geloof, vervolgens doen we ons best om dat enigermate te begrijpen was zijn stelling. Hij dankt zijn bekendheid vooral aan een opmerkelijk en heel curieus godsbewijs, met een zeer ingewikkelde en moeilijk te doorgronden argumentatie. Hij deed hiermee een vermaarde poging om het bestaan van God aan te tonen enkel en alleen op basis van - een godsdefinitie` of van - een godsbegrip`, zonder uit te gaan van de waarneembare werkelijkheid, en zonder het geloof als uitgangspunt te moeten nemen. Over zijn bewijsvoering werd in de loop der eeuwen en tot op heden hartstochtelijk gefilosofeerd. Door sommigen werd die bewijsvoering de hemel in geprezen, recentelijk nog door de Nederlander Willem Herman Stenfert Kroese, die daarbij sprak over een �"œdazzling darkness�"� (een schitterende duisternis). Anderen hebben echter het betoog van Anselmus als waardeloos bestempeld en van tafel geveegd, waaronder niemand minder dan de beroemde theoloog-filosoof Thomas van Aquino, terwijl Immanuel Kant de bewijzen van Descartes en Leibniz grondig bekritiseerd en van tafel geveegd heeft maar, in strijd met wat doorgaans aangenomen wordt, het - volstrekt andersoortig bewijs` van Anselmus ( - met een volstrekt andere inhoud en een volstrekt andere structuur`) nooit blijkt gezien nog gelezen te hebben. Ook Mattias Vanderhoydonks heeft meerdere boeken aan de theorie van Anselmus gewijd. In zijn nieuw boek overtreft de auteur zichzelf. Beperkte hij zich in vorige uitgaven nog tot een grondige analyse en weerlegging van de godsbewijzen en van het elfde-eeuwse raadsel van Anselmus, in dit boek wijst hij op een �"œfatale taalkundige valstrik�"� in het werk van de filosoof.
