A hand-book for travellers along the London and Birmingham Railway; with the fare and time tables, &c. corrected to the present day, and portions extracted (by permission of the proprietors) from Roscoe's larger work on this railway. Embellished with twenty-five fine engravings on wood, and a map of the line, of unequalled correctness and beauty.
London: R Groombridge; Wrightson and Webb, Birmingham, (c.1839). 14cm. 147[5]pp, 25 engravings (23 as plates). Original brown grained cloth with paper label to front board. Re-spined in matching cloth; lacks map. Date ascribed to COPAC copies is 1839 and it appears that the work is undated, as here, on the title page.

Two panels soiled; small holes to some fold junctions; closed tears to some folds at margins. Incorporated 4th July 1836. Only the London to Colchester section was completed. Further extensions were carried out by the Eastern Union Railway at a later date. Awdry, page 126.

Original decorated blind-stamped green grained-cloth gilt, patterned endpapers, aeg. Binder's ticket to rear paste-down. Spine a little browned; spotting and browning to frontis. All in all, a most attractive copy. Date and edition from preface. The multi-folding chart at rear seems not to have been present in the first edition. Ottley 6453.
