Herman Boerhaave (31 December 1668 - 23 September 1738) was a Dutch botanist, chemist, Christian humanist, and physician of European fame. He is regarded as the founder of clinical teaching and of the modern academic hospital and is sometimes referred to as "the father of physiology," along with Venetian physician Santorio Santorio (1561-1636). Boerhaave introduced the quantitative approach into medicine, along with his pupil Albrecht von Haller (1708-1777) and is best known for demonstrating the relation of symptoms to lesions. He was the first to isolate the chemical urea from urine. He was the first physician to put thermometer measurements to clinical practice. His motto was Simplex sigillum veri: 'Simplicity is the sign of the truth'. He is often hailed as the "Dutch Hippocrates"

Bruxelles, 1833, (later) folder with loose lithograph plates: engraved titlepage with erotic vignette, with 11 pornographic plates (handwritten non consecutive numbers in pencil on plates) some rubbing and minor folding to the edges of the plates, no watermark on the paper, 26x35cm including margins, 15x19,5cm plates themselves, illustrations for Gamiani ou deux nuits d'exces, in English Gamiani, or Two Nights of Excess which is a French erotic novel first published in 1833. Its authorship is anonymous, but it is believed to have been written by Alfred de Musset, with the lesbian eponymous heroine being a portrait of his lover, George Sand. It became a bestseller among nineteenth century erotic literature.The novel was illustrated with unsigned lithographs whose authorship remains unknown. They have been attributed to Achille Devéria and Octave Tassaert or Achille Devéria and P.L.H. Grevedon, among others. Kinsey: 843.7 M98 g2 1833. Eros invaincu: 688. Decoration plate and side trophies from the description of the entrance in the Hague of William III (Willem III) with his wife Mary II of England on February 5, 1691. Three different plates were employed along with a fourth completing the top part of the folio with a portrait of the king in a medal surrounded by two allegorical figures. The central and larger plate shows a crowded square with the procession headed by the king and the wife. On the medals on trophies on the left: FEL. TEMP. REPARATIO; AMYNTA; NEP.
