21x12,5cm, engraved aquatint portrait of Herman Boerhaave M.D. by Friedrich Wilhelm Bollinger (1777-1825), engraver, Herman Boerhaave (31 December 1668 - 23 September 1738) was a Dutch botanist, chemist, christian humanist, and physician of European fame. He is regarded as the founder of clinical teaching and of the modern academic hospital and is sometimes referred to as "the father of physiology," along with Venetian physician Santorio Santorio (1561-1636). Boerhaave introduced the quantitative approach into medicine, along with his pupil Albrecht von Haller (1708-1777) and is best known for demonstrating the relation of symptoms to lesions. He was the first to isolate the chemical urea from urine. He was the first physician to put thermometer measurements to clinical practice. His motto was Simplex sigillum veri: 'Simplicity is the sign of the truth'. He is often hailed as the "Dutch Hippocrates. Van Someren 556.

Good impression, clear and bright. some minor staining, Hermanus van Brussel was a painter and etcher, working in Haarlem and Utrecht. Trained as publisher, but entered St Luke Guild in 1797. 1796-1810 director of Academy of Haarlem ('Teekenacademie'); 1810 moved to Utrecht where he made at least one etching. Painted mainly landscapes; sixty etchings of which forty-five landscapes (none dated, few initialled); he was also a designer and painter of theatre sets.l Etching on paper with broad margins, 1802-1810, Sliggers 23, 4rd state of 4.

This scarse plate originates from: 'Vaderlandsche gezichten of afbeeldingen, behoorende tot den Tegenwoordigen staat der Vereenigde Nederlanden, in den jaare 1786 (tot 1792) naar 't leven getekend door J. Bulthuis (later: J. Gardiner Visscher naar J.B.) en in 't koper gedruckt door K.F. Bendorp.', published in Amsterdam by H. Gartman (1786-1792). Artists and Engravers: Made by 'C.F. Bendorp' after 'J. Bulthuis'. Carel Frederik Bendorp (Sas van Gent, 1736 - Dordrecht, 1814) was a Dutch engraver, draftsman and painter of mostly city and town views. He was a student of Hendrik Kobell, Dirk Langendijk and Wouter Uiterlimmige. Jan Bulthuis (Groningen, 1750 - Amsterdam, 1801) was a Dutch artist, painter and draughtsman. His painting skills were trained under Jurriaen Andriessen, while his drawing was developed under Johannes Wieringa. While he initially painted landscapes for wall decorations, he later dedicated himself to drawing town and city views. He worked in Groningen until 1780, when he moved to Amsterdam.

He is thought to have been mostly self-taught. During his career, Chapman engraved exceptional allegorical subjects after the designs of J. Smith and Raphael Corbould. He worked closely with Thomas Macklin on his Shakespeare series; almost half of the engravings bear his name. This portrait not in National Gallery.
