Flood after the breaking of the dykes of the major rivers between Arnhem and Culemborg, December 1740 - January 1741. Representation of the flooded area between the rivers with the villages and towns under water and in the foreground humans and animals escaping from the water. Angels in the clouds pour buckets of water across the country. The text below describes the scene with a further legend from 1 to 59 with details. Signed below the plate:'na het Leven Afgebelt, Getekent, en in kooper gebragt, door Jan Smit, 1741.'l Etching and text in letterpress; total: 597 x 515 mm; pasted on thicker paper, several damages along the margins, especially on the right where lacunas on the plate were filled in with ink; some dirt localized on the text region. Plate nr. 10 from the serie SYLVAE SACRAE MONUMENTA ... ANACHORETAUM published by Johannes I and Raphael I Sadeler in 1594. This plate is in reverse and slighly wider than the original. Possibly by Charles van Boeckel (fl. 1597-1617) [Hollstein de Vos, 1004a], or by Marcus Christoph Sadeler (1614-1650), Giacomo Piccini (ca. 1617- ca.1669) and Giovanni Merlo (17th cent.) from the first half of the seventeenth century [Hollstein de Vos, 1004f]. Besides the latin verses beneath the picture no other signatures are to be found on the plate. Lettered under the picture: '[M]ARTIVS Aruvernae pater & contemptor honoris / Permutat sacram sponte ligone pedum. / Atass sibi caueam fodit in qua Vivere possit / Immo mori cui mors nil nisi vita fuit'; plate is numbered '10'.l Engraving on paper; platemark: 170 x 202 mm, total: 213 x 265. Broad margins, close to the top margin two holes, probably for it was bound with oher plates. PB01SS(Martius-Martinus)

Pietersz. Maeschoon, or François Maelson). Before 1618. Portrait of the Dutch physician and statesman Frans Maeschoon (1538-before 1602). He was sent to Queen Elizabeth I of England on a diplomatic mission in 1575 and 1585. He is portrayed in three quarter holding his gloves with the left hand and a roll of paper in the right. Lettered on the bottom: 'DOCTOR FRANSOIS MAELSON'; in margin six lines of Dutch: 'Dus heeft men [...] de zon kon malen. / G. Brand.'; monogrammed on the top right corner 'IHW' with arrow.
