Very minor worming to prelims, not affecting text. A VG copy. "Arrian a historian, public servant, military commander and philosopher from the 2nd-Century Roman period.. His most important work is Anabasis of Alexander, generally .. regarded as the widest read, and arguably the most complete, account of the Macedonian conqueror, for Arrian was able to use sources which are now mostly lost, such as the contemporary works by Callisthenes (the nephew of Alexander's tutor Aristotle), Onesicritus, Nearchus and Aristobulus." [Wiki]. This mid-17th C. French edition of Arrian appears to be quite uncommon, with OCLC recording one copy in Germany, and KVK finding one copy in the Bibliothèque Nationale.

[19th C. Californiana / Los Angeles Artifact], LOS ANGELES CAL. Nov. 21, 1899. [Souvenir Cameo Shell]
[19th C. Californiana / Los Angeles Artifact]
LOS ANGELES CAL. Nov. 21, 1899. [Souvenir Cameo Shell]
[Los Angeles]: , 1899. ~ 1-1/2" x 3" x 1-1/4". Tiny nick to one edge; label bearing date worn down to the residue, though text is legible overall (the "N" of "Nov" lacking but easily inferred). Near Fine. A turn-of-the-century polished souvenir shell cut in the shape of a napkin holder, with an ornately-lettered "Los Angeles Cal" carved in relief to top and a small dated label to interior. We speculate that the shell was purchased from one of the city's curio dealers, such as the popular Winkler's Curios, a seemingly short-lived shop located at 346 S. Broadway. We find a November 26, 1899 advertisement in The Los Angeles Times for Winkler's "Holiday Goods | In California woods and shell novelties . Abalone shell jewelry, spoons, card receivers, shells and curios of all kinds." Several similar ads for "California Souvenirs in Shells, Shell and Wood Novelties" offered by Winkler's appear in the paper between 1899 - 1900.
