RISPOSTA Del Sig. PAOLO ANAFESTO Aall'Avviso del Sig. Antonio Qvirino, Nobili Venetiani, Circa la Scommunica della Santità di Papa Paolo V. contro il Duce, & Senato di Venetia
In Bolognaia: Per Bartolomeo Cochi, ad instanza di Simon Parlasca, 1607. 1st edition thus, i.e. this publisher (BL 17th C Italian, p. 704). Period full vellum binding with title hand-inked to spine crown. Bound with Baglioni's APOLOGIA [1606], see TavBooks ID #33817. 55, [1 (blank)] pp. Text in Italian. Printer's device to t.p. Decorative initial capital letters. 4to: A - G^4. 8" x 5-3/4". Inked annotations throughout. Withal, a VG - VG+ copy. Possevino "represented the literary, scientific, and diplomatic type of Jesuit, performing important political missions, establishing schools of science and letters, and applying himself to diplomatic protocols and classical authors with equal assiduity." [Catholic Encyclopedia]. Pope Paul, a lawyer-type individual vice a consensus diplomat, insisted on, for all practical purposes, a ubquitous ecclesiastical jurisdiction, which caused a number of quarrels between the Church and the secular governments of various states, notably Venice. In 1606, "Venice passed two laws obnoxious to Paul, one forbidding the alienation of real estate in favour of the clergy, the second demanding approval of the civil power for the building of new churches (in essence, a Venetian stance that the powers of the church must remain separate from those of the state). Two priests had been found guilty and committed to prison. Paul insisted that they be released to the Church. The Venetian position was ably defended by a canon lawyer, Paolo Sarpi, who extended the matter to general principles defining separate secular and ecclesiastical spheres. In April 1606 the Pope excommunicated the entire government of Venice and placed an interdict on the city. The rest of the Catholic clergy sided with the city, however, with the exception of the Jesuits, the Theatines, and the Capuchins, who were expelled from Venetian territories. Masses continued to be said in Venice, and the feast of Corpus Christi was celebrated with displays of public pomp and "magnificence", in defiance of the Pope. Within a year (March 1607) the disagreement was mediated by France and Spain. The Most Serene Republic refused to retract the laws, but asserted that Venice would conduct herself 'with her accustomed piety.' The Jesuits, which Venice considered subversive Papal agents, remained banned. No more could be expected. Paul withdrew his censure." [Wiki]. At the time of cataloguing, OCLC records 11 cc worldwide, with just 4 in the United States (Cornell, Penn, Harvard & Hunter). Price is for the volume, containing both works.

London: "Sold at the Society's Apartments, Burlington House; and by Longman, Green, Longmans And Roberts, and William And Norgate, 1861. 1st Edition. Period binding, stamped in gilt to back strip, black ink stain to all edges. iv, 200; xxiv, 47, [1 (blank)]; [2], 99, [1 (blank)]; lvi, [1 (blank)] pp. Illustrated with hand-colored lithographs (with light green ink only) by W[alter]. [Hood] Fitch (1817-1892). 8-1/2" x 5-7/8". A VG copy. Boards and edges are rubbed/(scuffed), some tears to the paper wrapped boards (especially lower board and corners), some soiling to boards and back strip, blue ink inscription to ffep - possible previous signature, some soiling to end papers (particularly to fore-edge), embossed library stamp to head of "List of Papers" (a.k.a. table of contents), age toning to leaves, water damage to fore-edge of leaves as well as a bit to tail -going towards middle of leaves, water damage is most noticeable on the leaves with illustrations (see photos), some light chipping and creasing to lower corner of last few leaves, overall internally clean and bright. Thomas Anderson "studied medicine at the University of Edinburgh, graduating with an MD in 1853. While at University he became interested in botany, and earned a gold medal for the best local collection of plants, and assisted in arranging the Indian herbarium. In 1854 he entered the Bengal medical service, and went to Calcutta. Subsequently he went to Delhi, where he was actively engaged during the mutiny, returning to Calcutta in 1858. His health failing, he came home, and, the steamer being detained at Aden for some days, he made an interesting collection of the plants of that region, upon which he based his ‘Florula Adenensis,’ published in 1860." [wiki]. Walter Fitch was a botanical illustrator from Scotland. Fitch's illustration have appeared in Curtis's Botanical Magazine, most publications issued by Royal Botanical Gardens Kew, George Bentham's 'Handbook of the British Flora', James Bateman's "A Monograph of Odontoglossum" and William Hooker's "A century of Orchidaceous Plants". "Fitch was made a fellow of the Linnean Society in 1857." [wiki]. The previous owner inscription reads "Skipper Kent 1953". Skipper Kent was a restauranteur in the San Francisco Bay Area, owning Zombie Village in Oakland and Skipper Kent's in San Francisco. These "tiki" inspired restaurants were his pride and joy as he was already and avid collector of Polynesian art and artifacts. Kent was also an avid orchid collector, so we suspect this was in his library at one time, with his interest in botany. The embossed library stamp comes from the library of Herman Knoche (1870-1945). Knoche was born in San Jose, California and studied botany at Stanford University. He moved to France to further his studies at University of Montpellier; his particular interest was island vegetation.

Andrews, Philip - Editor
AIR NEW YEARBOOK
New York: Duell Sloan & Pearce, 1942. 1st edition. Blue cloth binding with gilt stamped title lettering. Red, white & blue dust jacket. 264 pp. Illustrated with 355 b/w photographic images. Oblong format. VG+ (poi to front paste-down)/VG (modest edgewear/some soiling). A photo montage of aviation, as the field stood in the early 1940s. "Each photograph is completely documented, not with just engine and airframe data, but with a discerning analysis of its relative position in the current world conflict." A valuable resource for the WWII 'war bird' buff. I personally like the picture of the "Martin Mars (XPB2M-1)".
