DOCTOR FRANSOIS MAELSON (Portrait of Frans Pietersz. Maeschoon, or François Maelson)
Pietersz. Maeschoon, or François Maelson). Before 1618. Portrait of the Dutch physician and statesman Frans Maeschoon (1538-before 1602). He was sent to Queen Elizabeth I of England on a diplomatic mission in 1575 and 1585. He is portrayed in three quarter holding his gloves with the left hand and a roll of paper in the right. Lettered on the bottom: 'DOCTOR FRANSOIS MAELSON'; in margin six lines of Dutch: 'Dus heeft men [...] de zon kon malen. / G. Brand.'; monogrammed on the top right corner 'IHW' with arrow. Coats of arm on the top left corner. On the verso stamp of the E.
