Oval portrait of Justus Lipsius (also: Joest Lips or Joost Lips; 1547-1606), a Flemish Catholic philologist, philosopher, and humanist. Here is he depicted surrounded by five personifications (Gloria, Fama, Virtus, Doctrina and Modestia). An eight-line Latin dedication below the portrait.Etching and engraving on hand laid paper, sheet size 149 x 218 mm., engraved by Theodoor Galle (1571-1633) after his own design. This portrait was used as the frontispiece for Lipsius' 'Iusti Lipsii Sapientiae et litterarum antistitis fama postuma', Antwerp: 1607 and 1613.In very good condition, although cropped within platemark.
