Portrait of British actor David Garrick (1717-1779). When Samuel Johnson opened his school in 1735, Garrick was one of the few pupils. In 1737 the two men travelled to London together. Garrick first appeared on stage in London in 1741 and went on to achieve great success as an actor, playwright and theatre manager, becoming the most celebrated theatrical personality of the eighteenth century. Stipple and line engraving on laid paper, sheet size139 x 117 mm., by an anonymous engraver after the portrait of Sir Joshua Reynolds, c. 1800In good condition, cropped to the image edge. The caption was cropped and attached at the bottom of the image. Some small stains and soiling in the image edges. Garrick became immortal as the London Garrick Club was named after him.

Engraving and etching on hand laid paper, sheet size 325 x 245 mm., platemark 185 x 120 mm. Anonymous engraving, possibly copied from the portrait made by Cornelis Danckerts (I) c. 1640. This copy c. 1670-1730. With manuscript annotation '16' below the image. In good condition, despite quite ruffled sheet edges (creasing in the right edge, several small nicks in the left and lower edges; partly reinforced with acid-free archival tape). The image area clean and quite fresh.

Portrait of Jacques Callot (c. 1592 - 1635), a baroque printmaker and draftsman from the Duchy of Lorraine. He is a very important figure in the development of the old master print and made more than 1,400 etchings that chronicled the life of his period, featuring soldiers, clowns, drunkards, Romani, beggars, as well as court life. Portrait of Johann Geiler von Kaysersberg (1445-1510) was a priest. He is considered one of the greatest of the popular preachers of the 15th century. He was closely connected with the Renaissance humanists of Strasbourg.Engraving on hand laid paper, sheet size 130 x 89 mm., carrier size 347 x 250 mm. Made by an anonymous engraver, copy in reverse of the portrait by Robert Boissard, made in 1597-1599. This copy was probably made in the early 17th century.In good condition, cropped within platemark (with loss of top border) and attached to carrier sheet. Manuscript annotations in the lower margin of the carrier sheet. Some surface soiling in the image area. Two collection marks from the Rijksmuseum on the verso: Lugt 2233 (R.P.K.) and Lugt 789a. This last mark was used for duplicates that were sold in auction March 2-4, 1954 at Frederik Muller, Amsterdam.This mainly included material from the H. C. Valkema Blouw collection.
