Nederlandse tegels uit de 20ste eeuw met Chinese en Japanse voorstellingen.

¶ Dit boek beschrijft hoe de cultuur en beeldtaal van China en Japan hun weg naar de Nederlandse tegel hebben gevonden. Een belangrijke rol was hierbij weggelegd voor Martin van Straaten, een in Londen gevestigde tegelhandelaar die aanvankelijk porseleinen tegels in China kocht. Toen die na 1927 niet meer te krijgen waren, werd aan tegelfabrikant Tichelaar in Makkum gevraagd om de Chinese decors zelf in productie te nemen. De tegels uit de fabriek van Tichelaar staan centraal. Elk van de 55 tegels is voorzien van een korte beschrijving van de afgebeelde figuur; de traditionele karakters van de Chinese opschriften zijn getranscribeerd en vertaald. Daarnaast bevat dit boek overzichtelijke tabellen van alle series met Chinese voorstellingen die vanaf 1900 in de bekende fabrieken in Utrecht, Harlingen en Makkum werden vervaardigd. Tevens worden Chinese en Japanse voorstellingen van de Utrechtse, Maastrichtse en Goudse aardewerkproducenten behandeld. Het boek besteedt ten slotte ruimschoots aandacht aan de vele afbeeldingen van symbolen uit taoïsme en boeddhisme en van voorwerpen ontleend aan het dagelijks leven in het oude China en Japan.

Celebrated designer Jens Peter Dahl-Jensen worked for the Bing & Grohdahl company before founding his own firm in 1925. He modeled new sculptures, particularly creating a wonderful series representing models from the Far East, which he produced as figurines in the early days of the company's growth. Later, he acquired the works of other artists to enlarge the model collection. Of the almost 400 figurines the factory produced, Dahl-Jensen himself sculpted about 280. All the known figurines made by the company are included, arranged in both numerical and subject matter order, for easy reference. Over 350 color photographs display the natural wildlife and charming people that occupy this high quality line of sculpture. They are growing in popularity among collectors and presently are surprisingly affordable. Current values are reflected in the captions.

¶ This beautiful new publication examines the origin of Italian maiolica and its evolution from c. 1300-1500, a period which engendered some of the most rapid and exciting innovations in all ceramic art, before maiolica's better known heyday in the High Renaissance. High Renaissance maiolica, produced in Italy in the orbit of Raphael and other artists, is widely known and has been extensively studied. This istoriato, or narrative, maiolica graces the collections of many of the world's greatest museums. But not for almost 100 years has attention been focused on magnificent works that preceded it in the 14th and 15th centuries, which were at times prized by contemporary patrons more highly than precious metals. Maiolica before Raphael refocuses the spotlight of contemporary scholarship onto the birth of design in Italian maiolica, and its evolution from c. 1300 up until 1500. It was during this formative period that its characteristic tin-based glaze, with the pure and brilliant white surface it offered the late-medieval potter, engendered some of the most rapid and exciting innovations in all ceramic art. ¶ In dit boek wordt de complete geschiedenis en productie van de Haagse porseleinfabriek beschreven, die van 1776 tot 1790 in bedrijf is geweest. De onderneming werd opgezet door de Duitse koopman Anton Lijncker, wiens zoon in Den Haag sinds 1772 een winkel in keramiek en textiel dreef. Het verkoopsucces van het porselein bracht de Lijnckers ertoe ook zelf porselein te gaan vervaardigen. In de 'fabriek' werd bestaand porselein versierd dat elders gemaakt was. Hoewel vader en zoon rond 1778 suggereerden ook zelf porselein te vervaardigen, zijn in de bewaard gebleven bronnen hier nooit bewijzen van aangetroffen. Decoratieschilders van vooral Duitse afkomst voorzagen de voorwerpen van versieringsmotieven die aansloten bij de gangbare modes, maar tegelijkertijd ook iets typisch Haags hadden. Dit boek bevat talrijke afbeeldingen van de meest markante voorbeelden van de Haagse porseleinfabriek. Met de complete geschiedenis en de volledige productie is het een standaardwerk dat door geen liefhebber, verzamelaar en kenner gemist mag worden. Gberuikt exemplaar in zeer goede staat !
