Hand-Painted Escutcheon, in Honor of Italian Prime Minister Amintore Fanfani in 1963
S. l. (Washington, DC [?]), s. n. 1963. First Edition. Pressed cardboard (1/4") and paint, in the shape of a wedge-top escutcheon; the Emblem of the Italian Republic to recto (although also called Coat of Arms of the Italian Republic, it is indeed an emblem, because it is not designed to conform to the official heraldic rules); manuscript notes in pen and marker to verso; two miniscule punctures through the middle (for hanging); a bit of wear to corners; scattered spots of foxing; in about very good condition. Designed by an anonymous enthusiast and subtitled on verso: "Dinner (black tie) for His Excellency Amitore Fanfani, Prime Minister of the Italian Republic, January 18, 1963," the sign commemorated his official visit to the US, Washington, DC and Chicago, beetween January 15th and 18th of 1963. Amintore Fanfani (1908 - 1999) was one of Italy's best-known, post-WWII politicians, Prime Minister of the country for five separate terms, representative of the left-wing section of the Christian Democracy Party, and co-founder of the Italian Centre-left. Very good .

Bryan, William Jennings
Speeches of Congressman Bryan, of Nebraska, in the House of Representatives, During the 52d and 53d Congress (Signed/Inscribed Presentation Copy)
Lincoln, Nebraska, (Privately Printed by F. Schwind), 1894. First Edition. First edition; 9 x 6; pp. 186 (each speech with a separate pagination); black morocco over boards with four raised bands to spine; title, year of publication, and presentee's name in gilt on front board and spine; illustrated with portrait frontis and tables; a few scratches to boards and small rubbed spots to tips of spine and corners; leather at head of spine a bit brittle; overall in very good condition. William Jennings Bryan (1860 - 1925) was a politician, an orator, US Secretary of State and three times Democratic Presidential nominee. He was a devoted advocate for the Prohibition, a staunch anti-Evolutionist, and a supporter of the wisdom of the common people, for which he would become known as "The Great Commoner." His current book contained his various congressional speeches, including those on duties, taxes, tariffs, and the Silver Question. The work was presented to J. D. Calhoun with the inscription: "With compliments of your friend / W. J. Bryan / August 1894." Calhoun was the editor of "The Lincoln Journal" and one, who allegedly played a role, albeit tangential, in the demise of legendary outlaw Jesse James. In early 1882, Calhoun had advertised the sale of 160 acres of prime land outside of Franklin, Nebraska. Jesse, who had family ties in Nebraska and who was, presumably, tired of life on the run and wanted to settle in the countryside and raise his children in peace, contacted the editor, told him he was interested in purchasing the land, and arranged to meet him (although not officially confirmed, the meeting did happen and Jesse committed to buying the property). Meanwhile, his resources had been depleted and he needed to pull one more heist in order to be able to acquire his dream farm. While discussing his plans for that final robbery of the Platte City Bank with brothers Bob and Charley Ford, the last two remaining members of the James-Younger gang, Jesse was shot in the back of the head by Robert Ford. Very good .

Conseil d'Etat
Arrest Du Conseil D'Estat Du Roy, Portant Defenses a Toutes Personnes, Autres Que Les Maitres Cartiers, de Debiter Aucunes Cartes a Jouer, Sans la Permission Par Ecrit de Jean-Baptiste Bocquillon, Prepose a la Regie Du Droit Etabli Sur Les Cartes. Du 19 Novembre 1748
Poitiers, J. Faulcon l'aine, 1748. First edition presumed (OCLC lists only an undated, 2-page variant); 9 x 7 1/2; single, folded folio sheet, pp. [4]; large woodcut to upper margin of pp. 1; a few tiny, barely-visible punctures along spine (sewn/filed at an earlier time); thin, 2" strip of paper clipped from top edge, affecting only the upper right corner of the border of the woodcut; light creasing; overall in very good condition. A royal decree, reaffirming the 1746 law that authorized only maitres cartiers (playing cards makers) to manufacture the cards. It forbade all other people to create, sell, peddle, and copy legitimate playing cards, whether in Paris, or in any other city, even if maitres cartiers had not been present. Considering that it was in France, in the 15th century, where the icons for the four suits used today were developed and those suits were divided into two red and two black, the French dominance in playing cards was undisputed. Though, by the beginning of the 18th century myriad factors, including wars and plain old extravagance, had been draining France's finances at an alarming rate and to offset that, in 1701 a new duty was imposed on playing cards. In contemplation of collecting the taxes, the country was divided into 9 manufacturing regions and each manufacturer needed to submit a formal design template to the recettes generales in order to register his production and to pay his dues. One of the reasons for the current decree was the fact that the taxes kept climbing every year and more and more people began producing counterfeit and/or illegal playing cards - on the one side, to cash in on the profits and on the other side, to avoid paying taxes. Very good .

Fletcher, Thos.; Dollison, J. W.
An Address. The State Central Committee of the People's Party Meets and Issues an Address to the People of Arkansas
S. l. By the authors, 1894. First Edition. Small broadside, n. d. (ca 1894); 10 x 6; off-white paper, printed in black; a few old, fold lines; very good to near fine condition. A scarce, ephemeral circular, it was published by the People's Party, aka the "Populists" in Arkansas. A short-lived political party, it aligned itself with the Labor Movement and was critical of Capitalism, money-grabbing, railroads, banks, etc. The party was born as a direct consequence of economic depression and agricultural unrest in the South and the trans-Mississippi West in the late 1870s and 1880s. The third-party movement in Arkansas began in 1887, with the founding of the Union Labor Party. It would become the People's Party in 1891, in line with the formation of the national Populist Party. It never amounted to much, after the Election Reform Law of 1891 disfranchised citizens, who could not read, and after the Republican Party entered the state elections in 1892. The party never elected a congressman in Arkansas and ceised to exist after 1900. Very good .

Pakstas, Prof. Kazys
The Baltoscandian Confederation
S. l. (Chicago), Lithuanian Cultural Institute, 1942. First Edition. First edition in book form (compiled from lectures, given by the author in 1934); 8 3/4 x 5 3/4; pp. [3], 6-27, [1]; stapled, off-white, pictorial wraps; illustrated with a map and tables; small, rubbed spot to upper right corner of front wrap (removed bookshop label [?]); small cuts around staples with wraps partially pulling; in good to very good condition. Kazys Pakstas (1893 - 1960) was a Lithuanian educator, pioneer of professional geography in Lithuania, and political theorist. In his later life, he immigrated to the US, taught at several universities, and worked at the Library of Congress. He would be best known for developing the idea of Baltoscandia, or the Baltoscandian Confederation - the subject of the current booklet - first put forward by Swedish Professor Sten de Geer in 1928. A geopolitical concept, it proposed a Baltic - Scandinavian union, comprised of 8 countries - Lithuania, Norway, Finland, Iceland, Denmark, Estonia, Latvia, and Sweden. For the purpose of withstanding the influence from the big countries, a geographical, cultural, economic, political, and military unit was to be formed and maintained by the small nations. Good .

Parlement
Arrert (Sic. ) de la Cour de Parlement de Dauphine, Contre Les Femmes Qui Ayans Concu Enfans Par Moyens Des-Honnetes, Cachent Leur Grossesse, & Tuent Leur Fruict, Du 12 Iuillet 1664
S.l. (Grenoble [?]), s. n. 1664. First edition thus (OCLC lists one copy at Yale with the same title, but different text and date - 1638; this edition not in OCLC); 8 3/4 x 6 1/4; single leaf, removed, text to recto only; illustrated with a woodcut border above the title; a small manuscript note to top margin; minor spotting to left margin; in very good condition. Reaffirming a royal edict, first issued in 1556, the document dealt with prostitutes, or women, who had conceived in a dishonest way, and concealed their pregnancy, and after giving birth killed their infants and burried them, or threw them away. The women were to be punished by death, the manner of which was to be determined depending on the gruesomeness of the particular case. The paper contained an extract of the original 1556 edict, as well, which also required all unmarried women to officially declare their pregnancy and ordered the death penalty for any such mother, whose infant died before receiving proper baptism, regardless if an infanticide had actually occured. In early modern Europe, pregnant unmarried women could face punishment for fornication and if they had a miscarriage or the newborn died, they could be accused of infanticide, but the courts rarely saw such cases, as the magistrates were aware of the physicians' limitations in diagnosing and distinguishing a stillbirth, a natural-cause death, and a murder. It all chaged throughout most of Europe in the 16th century, arguably beginning with the above-mentioned 1556 edict in France, which was followed by similar ones in England and Germany in the 1600s and the early-1700s. Very good .
