The headpiece on pages one volume three shows the Muse giving a lyre to a man. Volume I illustrated with a frontispiece, six plates, and four headpieces. Volume II illustrated with two headpieces. Volume IV illustrated with two headpieces. A collection of the works of Joseph Addison. Volume I contains poems on several occasions, 'Rosamond, an Opera', 'Notes on Some of the Stories in Ovid's Metamorphoses', 'An Essay on Virgil's Georgics', 'Cato', 'Poemata', and 'Dialogues Upon the Usefulness of Ancient Medals&apos. Volume II contains 'Remarks on Several Parts of Italy', 'The Tatler', and 'The Spectator&apos. Volume III contains 'The Spectator&apos. Volume IV contains 'The Spectator', 'The Guardian', 'The Present State of the War', 'The Late Tryal and Conviction of Count Tariff', 'The Whig-Examiner', 'The Free-Holder', and 'Of the Christian Religion&apos. Addison is best known for his working relationship with Richard Steele, with whom he founded 'The Spectator' magazine. 'The Spectator' ran from 1711 to 1712, being a daily publication. Addison also held form the Kit-Kat Club, which renewed his friendship with Richard Steele, whom he at met at Charterhouse School. His most famous work was 'Cato, a Tragedy', a successful play about Marcus Porcius Cato Uticensis. Addison and Steele founded several publications during their friendship, including the literary and social journal "Tatler", which published from 1709 to 1711. Edited by Thomas Tickell. In a full calf binding. Externally, smart. A little bumping to the extremities. A small amount of loss to the head and tail of the spines. Light marks to the boards. A little rubbing to the spines. A highly sought after first edition printing from the famous Aldine Press. Rebound, in a lovely morocco binding by C and C McLeish. McLeish started his binding career at the Doves Bindery before starting a partnership with his sons as C & C Mcleish from 1909 to 1949. This book is from the Spencer library at Althorp Northamptonshire. With the bookplate of the Earl of Spencer's arms and pressmark B65. The Aldine Press was the printing office started by Aldus Manutius in 1494 in Venice. The first book appearing under his name was published in 1495. The press was the first to issue printed books in octavo and is also famous for introducing italics. In Greek. Adams A278; Ahmanson-Murphy 93; Renouard 49:6. Early manuscript title to the second blank, with original woodcut Aldine printer's device laid down. Marginalia in Greek and Latin by an early hand throughout. This work contains 85 leaves only, and therefore is lacking the first sixty-five leaves. Lacking the fables and life of Aesop. Retaining leaves d6-o4. This work retains the accompanying text including the 'editiones principes' of Cornutus/Phurnutus, 'De Natura Deorum' by Cicero, 'Palaephatus' on disbelieving histories,'De Non Credendis Historiis', Heraclitus Ponticus' 'De Allegoriis Apud Homerum and Horapollon', 'Hieroglyphica' as well as a collection of proverbs. Many of the works to this volume appear in their first edition here. A very scarce work, beautifully produced by the Aldine Press and with fascinating provenance. In a full morocco binding. Externally, very smart with light rubbing to the joints. Internally, firmly bound. Front endpaper is chipped to the edges with handling marks, and prior owner's notes as well as bookplate. This collection has a smart, full calf binding, with gilt detailing to the boards and to the spine. With attractive marbled endpapers. Dated using Jisc from copies held at the University of Edinburgh Libraries. This collection was first comprised in 1820 by Dr Aikin with the aim to provide a single volume of important poetry at a moderate cost, without abridgement or omissions. Aikin strived to protect the art of the poet, with this collection being so well-received that it was still being published twenty-five years on, in this edition. The biographical and critical notices of the authors added later. This particular edition was published after Dr Aikin's death. There is a supplement included by his daughter, Lucy Aikin, who was an English historical writer, biographer and correspondent. This collection is comprised of many influential poets of the time, including John Milton, John Dryden and Jonathan Swift. This work is set out in clear columns, with the poet and poem title to the head of each page and a short biography of each poet prior to their work. With a personal bookplate of T. W. Chester Martin to the front paste down and an ink inscription to the first blank, reading 'T. W. Chester Martin, on his leaving Harrow with the best wishes of his friend and tutor, G. W. Harris', dated July 31. 1860. In smart full calf binding, with gilt detailing and marbled endpapers. Externally, very smart, with light bumping and rubbing to the extremities. The poem discusses the power of imagination, and how pleasure can be derived from the perception of beauty, how imagination is distinguished from philosophy, and also the pleasure to be found in the study of man. The poem was inspired by Joseph Addison's essays on imagination published in 'The Spectator&apos. Written by Mark Akenside, an English poet, who had the idea from the poem on a 1738 visit to Morpeth.'The Art of Preserving Health' was the author's first great poetical success, a masterful poem written in blank verse and dealing with the heavy subject of death, including a passage on the plague. Collated complete. In a quarter calf binding with marbled paper to the boards. Externally, generally smart, with some rubbing to the boards resulting in a little loss of paper. Crack to the tail of the front joint, and smaller cracks to the tail of the rear joint and to the head of the joints. Light rubbing to the spine and a small amount of loss to the head and tail. Mark Akenside was an English poet and physician. In this, his most famous work, he explores the various kinds of pleasures that can be derived from beauty, and a meditation on the study of Man. Direct from the Regency library of Elizabeth Greenly, later Lady Elizabeth Coffin Greenly. Elizabeth Greenly, born at Titley Court, Herefordshire, was a noted and varied collector. She kept prolific diaries from 1784 until her death in 1839 which included her responses to current events and occasions in her daily life. Among the diaries many names and anecdotes of celebrities of the time appear, including Lord Byron, Marie Antoinette, Mary Wollstonecraft and Hannah More. She was known to comment on customs of foreign countries to which she and her friends had traveled, and had a keen interest in scientific discoveries and advancements including medicine and archaeology. The Greenly library contents show Elizabeth Greenly's numerous interests including: Welsh causes, Science, topography, travel, Bibliana and literature, particularly female poets. The library contains many first editions of contemporary works, and many are signed or contain her bookplate. The library contained over 1000 volumes which show the diversity and depth of her interests and give an insight into the life of this fascinating collector. In a full calf binding. This work is an outspoken call to war against Spain, in opposition to Walpole's policy of peace. This poem originally appeared in 'The Gentleman's Magazine' under the title 'A British Philippic' prior to its separate publication. Collated, this copy is lacking the plate. Detailed headpiece to the first leaf of the work. Disbound. ESTC reference no: T50972. This edition predates a re-issued edition entitled 'A British Philippic' with a new title page and textual alterations. Mark Akenside was an English poet and physician. He attended the Royal Free Grammar School of Newcastle, and a dissenting academy in the town. prior to being sent to the University of Edinburght to study theology with a view to becoming a minister.
