 Eliza Acton, Poems
Eliza Acton
Poems
London, R. Deck, Longman and Co. 1826. First edition. Leather. A bright, scarce first edition of Poems by Eliza Acton. Bound in the original publisher's boards, skilfully re-backed to suit. With the original half title. First Edition. Very scarce. Only appears once in auction records for the last 30 years (1995). Eliza Acton, 1799 - 1859, was an English poet and cook. Acton is probably most famous as the author who produced one of the country's first cookbooks aimed at the domestic reader rather than the professional cook or chef. In the book was included the first recipe for Brussel Sprouts. At the age of seventeen she opened a school for girls, which remained open for four years. Her health was precarious and she apparently spent some time in France where she is rumoured to have had an unhappy love affair. She published her Poems after returning home and they enjoyed some small success. She subsequently published some single, longer poems, but it was her Modern Cookery (1845) that garnered her the widest acclaim; it was an immensely influential book which established the format for modern writing about cookery. Shortly after its publication she relocated to London but sadly died in 1859. Isabella Beeton's famous Mrs Beeton's Book of Household Management is closely modelled on Acton's publications. Bound in the original publisher's boards, skilfully re-backed to suit. There is wear to the extremities, including bumping and rubbing, with handling marks and discolouration to the boards. There is a repair to the front board. Internally, generally firmly bound. Pages are generally bright with occasional light scattered spots. Spots do not affect visibility of text. Very Good . Ill.: None. Very Good .

With the errata leaf to the rear, and the uncommon three printed leaves of the Assertiones Quaedam. Present to only variant copies. This issue has the royal arms to the verso of the title page. Patrick Adamson was a Scottish divine. This edition of Adamson's works have been edited by his son in law Thomas Wilson. It includes for the first time, Adamson's paraphrase of the Book of Job in Latin hexameters. It is dedicated to King James I who, as James VI removed Adamson from office. Adamson was removed from his position as the Archbishop of St Andrews due to his conflict with the General Assembly who were strongly Presbyterian. Following many heretical allegations including the supposed use of a witch to cure himself Adamson was excommunicated. This ruling was later rescinded as the General Assembly did not have the authority to do this. Following the attempted excommunication Adamson was found guilty of charges such as 'falsehood, double dealing, erroneous doctrine' by the Assembly which resulted in King James VI withdrawing his primacy and transferring his episcopal revenues to the 2nd Duke of Lennox. Prior his being removed from his position Adamson has written Latin translation of the Lamentations of Jermiah and the Book of Revelation. Both are to this work. This dedication is a venture to revive Adamson's reputation from the misinterpretations of the Scottish Presbyterians. (ODNB). The collected works also contains Adamson's famed first publication, his poetical attack on the Roman Catholics in Aberdeen 'De Papistarum Superstitiosis Ineptiis&apos. It also contains his poem of thanksgiving regarding the birth of James VI/I, his 'Serenissimi ac nobilissimi, Scotiæ, Angliæ, Franciæ, & Hyberniæ Principis' and his highly acclaimed catechism of verse 'Catechismus Latino carmine redditus&apos.
