From Wikipedia: Thomas Burke (29 November 1886 – 22 September 1945) was a British author. He was born in Eltham, London (back then still part of Kent). His first successful publication was Limehouse Nights (1916), a collection of stories centred on life in the poverty-stricken Limehouse district of London. Many of Burke's books feature the Chinese character Quong Lee as narrator."The Lamplit Hour", an incidental poem from Limehouse Nights, was set to music in the United States by Arthur Penn in 1919.[1] That same year, American film director D. W. Griffith used another tale from the collection, "The Chink and the Child" as the basis of his screenplay for the movie Broken Blossoms.". Very Good+ .

Later, living in Southern California, he photographed many of the Spanish Missions built in the late 1700s. In 1912, Taylor moved to Coronado, where he lived, worked in photography, and established the Coronado Floral Association with his wife Maud. When he started retiring, Harold and Maud moved to El Cajon where they cultivated a half-acre Victorian flower garden on their dear little hill, their “Lomita Querida. ” He died in 1960 at the age of 81. Educated in Geneseo, New York, Cheney practiced law briefly in Woodstock, Vermont and New York City before moving to California with his first wife Abigail Perkins Vance Cheney, teaching music, lecturing, and working as a postal clerk. In 1887 he assumed the position of librarian of the Free Public Library of San Francisco, where he oversaw the openings of the system's first branch libraries and hosted the first west coast conference of the American Library Association in 1891. In 1894 he moved to Chicago, where he served as librarian of the Newberry Library. In 1909 he retired and moved to San Diego with his second wife, Sara Barker Chamberlain.
