Riel, Louis "David
Poésies Religieuses Et Politiques
Montreal, Published by the Riel family, printed by l'Etendard, 1886. First edition. Stapled wraps. pp. 51. 11 1/2 x 18 cm. Stapled wraps chipped at top edge, tape repair to corner of cover. Frontispiece of Riel. Contents clean & unmarked. The last (unnumbered) page contains a printed statement from the Riel family stating (our English translation): 'We, members of the Riel family, declare and certify that this is a true copy of the documents written and composed by Louis 'David' Riel'. The certificate is dated January 12, 1886, shortly after Riel's execution for treason on November 16, 1885. Two longish poems are set out, composed in 1879 while Riel was in exile in Montana. As there was at that time some uncertainty as to their authenticity (the poems not having previously been published), the Riel family was persuaded to attest to Riel's authorship. See Peel 1532. Printed in Montreal by Imprimerie de 'L'Etendard'. .

SCOTT, Walter, Ballads and Lyrical Pieces [and Other Works]
SCOTT, Walter
Ballads and Lyrical Pieces [and Other Works]
Edinburgh, John Ballantyne and Co, 1815. Hardcover. 8vo. Originally bound in brown morocco leather with marbled endpapers. Three titles bound in one volume: (1) GLENFINLAS AND OTHER BALLADS, with a title page showing the publisher as John Sharpe, London, 1812. This title page is immediately followed by a second title page for BALLADS AND LYRICAL PIECES, showing the publisher as James Ballantyne & Co. Edinburgh, 1812, Fourth Edition. Probably Ballantyne used the English sheets for this collection, the pagination for which is pp. [viii], 182. Then follows a second Ballantyne publication, THE VISION OF DON RODERICK AND OTHER POEMS, identified on the title page for this collection as the Second Edition, 1810; and the pagination for which is pp. [11], 164 (followed by three pages of publisher's ads). There are many pages of notes at the end of DON RODERICK, and the Miscellaneous Poems. The third title bound-in is THE FIELD OF WATERLOO; A POEM, also published by Ballantyne, and shown as the Second Edition, 1815. The pagination for this is pp. [187-193], 240 (i.e. 54 pages in total, including notes and a listing of Scott's works at the end). This compilation was originally bound in full morocco, with marbled foredges and endpapers. The boards are now detached (but present). The leather spine is absent. The contents are occasionally foxed, but generally clean and unmarked. The binding is still tight. Obviously, this volume is a candidate for re-backing, or re-binding, and has been priced accordingly. With six steel engravings, engraved from the designs of Rochard Westall, R.A. Ill.: steel engravings.
