Bleyswijck, François van (1671-1746)
GEDICHTEN VAN JACOB ZEEUS
Frontispiece to the first edition of 'GEDICHTEN VAN JACOB ZEEUS', collection of poetry by Jakob Zeeus (1686-1718). A muse sitting on the left beside a grave, holding a lyre on her lap. Some putti at her feet playing with a book. Another putto hanging a laurel wreath on the grave. On the right a personification of a river and the ruins of a castle in the background. Above in the clouds a Fama playing a trumpet. The original plate was published as dating 1720 and bearing a different inscription on the grave. This was in fact the grave of Arnold Mooen and the frontispiece was employed for his own collection of poetry. The publisher likely modified the plate and adapted it to the new publication. Lettered below the composition: 'Te DELFT by REINIER BOITET. 1721', signed further below: 'F. Bleyswyck jnven & Fecit'. The title page is also included in this lot; Bleyswijck etched also a very nice vignette included in the title page, with a poet seated at a table, composing poems in front of a large library. l (Frontispiece) Etching and engraving on paper with some margin; plate mark: 186 x 140 mm, total: 201 x 158; paper cooked especially on the top left side, some soiling due to handling, yet interesting print. (title page) Etching and letterpress in red and

With a dedication to Mr. Pieter Clifford (1712-1788, secretary and mayor of Amsterdam) and his wife Constantia Catharina Sautyn (1712-1782), accompanied by another large engraving. Following the introductory praises of Bernardus de Bosch (with contributions by various writers/poets, for instance: Lucretia van Merken en Dirk Willink), the main work follows, divided in four parts: Stichtelyke gedichten, Mengeldichten, Lofdichten and Lykdichten. Each part is introduced by a full page engraving ( I. de Bosch del., I. Folkema sculp.). Bernardus de Bosch (1709-1786) was a Dutch poet and a protector of the arts.l Second volume (of two). Usually the titlepage states what volume it concerns. In our case "Tweede deel" (second volume) has been scratched off the titlepage leaving a barely visible smudge behind and part of the letter L.

 FEITH, RHIJNVIS,, Poëtisch mengelwerk
FEITH, RHIJNVIS,
Poëtisch mengelwerk
Amsterdam (Amsteldam), J.B. Elwe, 1788, 8vo., later marbled paper hard cover binding, [4]+269+[3] pp., some wear and tear with the paper covering the spine faded and slightly damaged, the endpapers have browned, the bookblock has some stains, but is still of solid construction. There are three beautiful engravings. One is on the titlepage, depicting four cherubs (by N.v.d.Meer). The other two are anonymous and are entitled "zededichten" and "bespiegelingen". There is also a page with music, entitled "Romance". A fold out engraving accompanying the poem "Een Christen op zijn landgoed" is missing. In the preface the publisher states that this book contains some works by Feith, accompanied with some other works. Elwe did so to present the readers with a decent volume, because experience had taught him that small volumes often get lost. The publication let to an argument between Feith and Elwe, because the poet was displeased with it. It was unclear which works of poetry were his, and he disapproved of the other works presented next to his.
