An anthology of the poems and plays of one of the "Dymock poets", Lascelles Abercrombie (1881-1938). Although not generally known now, Abercrombie was admired and respected by his fellow poets, especially for his poems in blank verse. This anthology includes 'Interludes', 'The Sale of St. Thomas', 'Emblems of Love', 'Twelve Idyls' and six plays. In the publisher's original cloth binding, with the original unclipped dust wrapper. An eighteenth century edition of Publii Terentii Afri Comoediae Ad Optimorum Exemplarium Siden Recensitae.A collection of the theatrical comedies of the North African-Roman playwright Publius Terentius Afer, known in English as 'Terence' (c195/185-c159 BC).Terence's comedies were performed for the first time around 166-160 BC. He was brought to Rome as an enslaved person and was freed by Terentius Lucanus, a Roman senator, due to his abilities. Terence's plays were used to learn to speak Latin in the Middle Ages and during the Renaissance, and were imitated by William Shakespeare in some instances. First printed in 1470, his works were popular during the revival of classical literature. Illustrated with an engraved monochrome plates frontispiece. Collated, complete. Prior owner's book plate to the first pastedown. From the library of the Earl of Berkshire Lord Marshall of England, dated 1720, being Henry Bowes Howard (1686-1757), English peer. Many of the pages are worn to the extremities and suffering some loss, including the frontispiece. In full calf binding. Externally, fair. There is some loss to the tail of the spine, and considerable rubbing to the boards, the spine, and the extremities. Thomas Anstey Guthrie (1856 - 1934) was an English novelist and journalist, who wrote his comic novels under the pseudonym F. Anstey. Guthrie became an important member of the staff of Punch magazine, in which his voces populi and his humorous parodies of a reciter's stock-piece represent his best work. In 1901, his successful farce The Man from Blankley's, based on a story that originally appeared in Punch, was first produced at the Prince of Wales Theatre, in London. In a cloth binding with unclipped dustwrapper. Externally, in excellent condition with only minor bumping to head and tail of spine. A script of Bélisaire, a drama in five acts, written in French by D'Ozicourt. This play was an adaptation of Jean-François Marmontel's novel Bélisaire, first published in 1767, a story of the life of the Byzantine general Belisarius. The book was banned, as it indicated that King Louis XV was ungrateful towards his faithful servants. This novel was rewritten, parodied and adapted on stage by three people: one anonymous, one by Moissy, another one by D'Ozicourt. Disbound but intact. Externally sound, with remnants of the original end papers, and a couple of insect holes throughout the whole textblock, though mostly not affecting the text itself. Internally, firmly bound.
