USS GENERAL WILLIAM A MANN (AP 112). Slow Boat From China
: , 1948. Photographs mounted in a twin-screwpost commercial photograph album. 30 leaves of black mounting-stock paper. 118 b/w photographs [evidence of some removed], plus 10 RPPCs. Most photographs captioned, as are all RPPCs. Album: 7-1/2" x 10-3/4". Images mainly 2-1/2" x 3-1/4" [xx] and 3-1/2" x 5-1/8". Album lacks front cover. General signs of use to mounting leaves. About VG. Images generally clear & sharp, overall VG - VG+. The "General W. A. Mann, a P2-type troopship, was built by the Federal Shipbuilding and Drydock Company of Kearny, New Jersey, in 1942–43 and commissioned on the date of acquisition, 13 October 1943, Comdr. Paul S. Maguire, USNR, in command.. From 2 November 1945 to 5 January 1946 she made a round trip voyage from Seattle to Nagasaki and Wakayama, Japan, setting the pattern of a series of "Magic Carpet" passages and "Diaper Runs" in which servicemen and their families were carried to and from the Far East. She stood duty as a "Guam Ferry" and continued to transport men and material until transferred to the Military Sea Transportation Service in October 1949." [Wiki] This photo album, obviously compiled by one of the ship's enlisted crew, documents one such voyage in 1948. And while there are a goodly number of photographs depicting the sailor's crewmate's [e.g. "Doc Moose" & "Chief Dees (The Slave Driver)"], there are also a significant number depicting the ship & shipboard life ["Doctor and Chief Rankin Stacking the Chow", "Captain's Inspection Aboard the Mann", & "One of the Main Engine Rooms on the Mann"], other vessels [e.g. "S.S. Cleveland on her Maiden Voyage", "Tin Can at Pearl Harbor" & "Sea Plane Tender at San Diego"], and places visited on the voyage [e.g. "Tied up at Pearl Harbor", "Comming [sic] Up The Wangpoo River to Shanghia China" & "Anchored Out in Manila Bay in the Phillippines"]. Most of the RPPCs depict life in Hawaii [e.g. "Banana Tree", "Kau Kau Corner, Honolulu" & "Hula Girls & Canoe"]. All-in-all, a nice visual record documenting this ship's 1948 voyage.

Hannon, J. Walter [1890 - 1955]
INDIANA TELEPHONE COMPANY / BELL Services / AT&T PLANT SUPERVISOR'S ARCHIVE. Photograph albums, Labor and conference reports, trade magazines, etc., Circa 1920 - 1957
[Indianapolis, IN]: J. Walter Hannon, Indiana Telephone Company, 1955. Two black (one dark brown) flexible leatherette bindings with gilt stamped lettering to front, two albums with black cord ties. One black blind-stamped stiff cloth covered folder, one flexible black plastic folder. Loose photographs in mylar covers. 3 Photograph Albums, of varying pages. Two typewritten notebooks, one folder of Indiana journal publications laid-in, and many loose photographs and adverts. Many b/w photographs throughout albums (some sepia toned), including 28 photo postcards; most group company photographs commercial, remaining photographs by Hannon(?) or perhaps a company photographer. Nine loose 8" x 10" original photos, six 2.5" x 4" photos tipped-in on loose board with clipping attached. Labor report with photo plates, illustrations, diagrams, numerous letters on letterhead, memos, tipped-in printed brochures, text illustrations, color illustrated wrappers. Photo Albums oblong format: (1) 10-1/2" x 13-1/2". (2) 8-1/2" x 11-1/2". (3) 10-1/4" x 13-1/2". Albums with modest rubbing to edges and light soiling/aging to covers; light musty odor; minor bumping to edges and scuffing to fore-edges. An extensive archive chronicling nearly 40 years of the Indiana history of what would become AT&T Co. during the more than half-decade career of one of the company’s Indianapolis-based plant supervisors, J. Walter Hannon. Hannon took a job at the Leavensworth, KS, telephone plant in order to pay his way through high school and college, and transferred to Indiana Telephone Co. in 1916. Over 700 b&w images provide a dense visual record of the company’s workers and operations, with a particular emphasis on the natural and manmade disasters that affected service during these years; additionally, a large framed lithograph (23-1/2” x 30-3/4”) entitled â€oeLoyalty to Public Service,” from 1921, is also included. Hannon’s notes, memos, and trade publications offer an accompanying, if far from complete, documentary record of company policies and internal workings. The photograph albums and loose photos are the undeniable heart of the archive. The first album, which includes a few leaves of personal photographs, depicts Hannon early in his career, showing both the young man and the still fairly young telephone company at work. Photos include images of laborers — including at least two female workers — digging ditches for conduit pipes and laying lines of cable across muddy fields and beside city streets; cutting and erecting telephone poles; repairing ice-laden telephone wires, etc. Several views are included of the destruction following the F3 or F4 tornado that ripped through Indianapolis on May 18, 1927, destroying over 400 homes in the eastern part of the city and doing considerable damage to the area’s telephone wiring. The second album covers the Anderson, IN fire that decimated the building housing the city’s telephone switchboard, as well as the department store in which the fire began and several doctors’ and dentists’ offices, on January 29, 1934, and the third album is almost entirely devoted to recording the effects of the Ohio River Flood of 1937 on plant operations in Jeffersonville, IN. Jeffersonville was heavily submerged, but fared better than some: water levels reached nearly 54’ in Evansville, IN, during the flood, causing the city to declare martial law, and reached 80’ in Cincinnati. Images include telephone crews boating to work and rowing out to half-submerged telephone poles; discussing engineering problems at the â€oeLog Cabin,” where ~300 workers were housed and fed in dormitories during and after the flood (including one of the â€oebar” at Log Cabin, which the Index notes was the â€oe[d]raft table during weekdays. Altar on Sundays”); the workers’ in their dorms; and much more. Accompanying the albums are Hannon’s notes and reports, as well as various trade publications. Of particular interest, given AT&Ts long resistance to labor unions, is a note in Hannon’s hand from a 1926 conference that â€oe[o]rganized labor gave more production & share of profits […] get into larger connecting(?) co’s first” (AT&T instituted Employees’ Committees around this time, which the Wagner Act of 1935 ruled were illegal); later reports and a binder of internal memos from 1950 on labor, equipment and cost efficiency make up the remaining portion of Hannon’s personal material in the archive. Full list of material available upon request.

[Photograph Album]. Harvey, Farrell E. - Compiler [inferred]
U.S.S. ALGONQUIN C. G. 328 Black & White Images
[Seattle, WA]: , 1930. Brown suede album with hand-painted suede covers with suede ties, with front cover having a hand-printed title "Photographs U.S.S. Algonquin C.G." & Coast Guard emblem. 10 pp. autographs pages, unused except for five penciled names (all dated 1930) + 40 leaves of black mounting paper, unpaginated, with last two leaves unused. Images mostly snapshot size of 2-1/2" x 3-1/2", or 3-/12" x 4-1/2". Laid in: A menu from Thanksgiving dinner 1929, one 5" x 7" portrait of the crew, two 8" x 10" photographs, and a 1955 official's Seattle Gold Cup committee ribbon [with Harvey's name-tag at top]. Oblong format: 8" x 11-1/2". Album edgeworn; leaves quite fragile at the gutter, causing many to be detached or nearly so, though all leaves appear to be present. Photographs generally Very Good or better. Overall, Good condition. An extensive, albeit unofficial, visual record of life aboard the USS Algonquin, commissioned as a Revenue Cutter in 1897 and retired late in 1930. The Algonquin operated along the East Coast of the United States with additional assignments in the West Indies and the Gulf of Mexico. Later, in cooperation with the U.S. Navy at the onset of World War I, the Algonquin patrolled and defended Chesapeake Bay, with subsequent assignment to European waters, escorting over 750 ships safely in her rounds between Gibraltar, England and the Azores. In 1919, the Algonquin was transferred to the West Coast, assigned to the 13th Naval District, which meant patrolling the Pacific Northwest, as well as the islands and coast of Alaska, which included protection of endangered seals. Evidence suggests this album compiled by Farrell Harvey, a documented Algonquin crewman [F 1c] during the late 20s/early 30s, while the ship was stationed in the PNW. These primarily uncaptioned photographs illustrate the rough and ready life of sailors such as Harvey during their shipboard tour, with divers images of the crew, their drills and daily tasks, and significant occasions such as the Equatorial Line Crossing Ceremony. Many photographs show sister ships and other vessels, coastline scenery, whaling, and people encountered in the tropics and divers scenes while patrolling along the Pacific Northwest Coast. A wonderful primary source for seeing the life of a Coastie aboard a cutter during the late 1920s, and into the beginning of the 1930s.
