The first edition. Rebound in full blue cloth. Illustrated profusely with over 600 monochrome photographs, most by Roman Vishniac, and a monochrome woodcut illustration to the title page. Written in both English and Yiddish. This work was edited by Raphael Abramovitch, a Russian socialist, member of the 'General Jewish Workers' Union in Lithuania, Poland and Russia' and a refugee. This important work documents the lives of the Jewish community in Europe during the 1920's and 30's. The work provides a post war memorial of these communities, now lost to history due to the genocide caused by the war.University library copy, with the expected labels. Re-bound in full cloth. Externally very smart with bumping and slight rubbing to the head and tail of the spine, library location to the tail of the spine, and closed tears to the cloth to the head joints with front joint starting slightly. Bound back to front. Bookplate from 'Carmel College Library to the front free endpaper with remnants of labels to the rear and a small paper folder adhered to the rear pastedown. Internally firmly bound with lightly age toned pages with spotting to the front, closed tears to the odd page including a significant closed tear to the index and a library label to the edition page. He became entranced by her, shooting a series of pin-up shorts of her at Tobay's Beach in Long Island. After Marilyn announced to him that she wanted to become an actress, Dienes took her on a road trip to photograph her across the natural landscapes of America. These photographs became widely printed and help to start her career. They met a few other times for photographs across her career in 1946, 1952, and 1953, their last meeting being in June 1961, a year before Marilyn's early death. This volume and Dienes' photography shows a touching and intimate look at Norma Jeane's journey to becoming Marilyn. The photographs begin with young Norma Jeane and her natural curly brown hair, transitioning throughout the volume into the blonde bombshell pop culture icon.Edited by Steve Crist and Shirley T. A Galley Copy; an advanced copy of the work sent prior to the final proofreading. Comprised of page entitled 'Galley 2' running to 'Galley 124', with writing to the recto of the page only. 'Galley 2' to 'Galley 56' are stapled, with '57' to '87' also stapled, while '85' to '99' are disbound, and '100' to '124' are stapled, but a little strained. Written by American photographer and writer, Dorothy Norman, who had a close relationship with fellow photographer, Alfred Stieglitz, often working together on the promotion of modern art. Norman draws upon her relationship with Stieglitz, as well as incorporating some of his own personal words, to present a warm image of this prominent figure in the field of photography and modern art in America. The publisher's original proof papers, stapled together in sections from 'Galley' 2-56, 57-84 and 100-124, with 'Galley' 85-99 disbound. Pages are folded horizontally. Externally, very good, with light edge wear. Two labels to the front cover, with one label slightly torn and the other label containing an ink and pencil annotation. Text has faded slightly to the front page. Internally, light creasing and the odd closed tear to the extremities of some of the pages. The first edition of this privately printed work of photography, one of 500 copies produced.The title refers to Inchmahome, an anglicisation of Innis Mo Cholmaig, the largest of three islands in the Lake of Menteith, in Stirlingshire.In his introduction, photographer and author John A. Stewart explains that during regular visits to the location he undertook a project of creating a 'faithful record rather than pictorial impressions' of the loch and priory of Inchmahome. Stewart also explains that many of these photographs were taken prior to a government funded restoration of the area, and therefore provide an important record of the area prior to preservative measured.With a colour frontispiece, numerous photographic plates, and a brief historic account of the area, and the noble families who have resided there.With the former owner's inscription 'Peter Johnson' to the front free endpaper.
