Hij benadrukt steeds dat het romantische idee van versmelting en eenheid, waar liefde vaak mee wordt geassocieerd, verkeerd is. In de liefde draait het juist om twee individuen die in elkaar het unieke herkennen en in stand willen houden. Het beschouwen van de ander in zijn individualiteit, houdt automatisch in dat je ook je eigen individualiteit behoudt. Je kunt niet het unieke van je geliefde waarderen en tegelijk jezelf uitvlakken of opofferen. Elke liefde is egoïstisch, zegt men, maar dat is dus precies wat Solovjov op prijs stelt.
