Notes and Queries: A Medium of Inter-Communication for Literary Men, Aritists, Antiquaries, Genealogists, Etc. Volumes I - XII
London, George Bell, 1849 - 1855. Leather. The first twelve volumes of Notes and Queries edited by W. J. Thoms. Bound in half leather and marbled paper-covered boards, with gilt lettering. This set runs from November 1849 through to December 1855 Twelve Volumes bound as Six. Notes and Queries is a long-running quarterly scholarly journal that publishes short articles related to "English language and literature, lexicography, history, and scholarly antiquarianism". Its emphasis is on "the factual rather than the speculative". The journal has a long history, having been established in 1849 in London; it is now published by Oxford University Press. It was founded as an academic correspondence magazine, in which scholars and interested amateurs could exchange knowledge on literature and history. The format consisted of 'Notes' (miscellaneous findings of correspondents that they and the editors considered of interest to the readership), and 'Queries' (and responses to queries), which formed the bulk of the publication. William John Thoms, 1803 – 1885, was a British writer. Thoms's investigation of folklore and myth led to a later career of debunking longevity myths. Thoms was an antiquary and miscellaneous writer, for many years a clerk in the secretary's office of Chelsea Hospital. He was in 1845 appointed Clerk, and subsequently Deputy Librarian to the House of Lords. Thoms is credited with inventing the word folklore in an 1846 letter to the Athenaeum. He invented this compound word to replace the various other terms used at the time, including "popular antiquities" or "popular literature". He was fond of the works of Jacob Grimm, which he considered remarkable. Bound in half calf with marbled paper-covered boards. There is mild wear to the extremities, including mild bumping and rubbing. The bindings are tight and firm. The front hinge of volume 1 is strained. The hinges of volume 6 have failed. Internally the pages are generally clean and bright, with very slight browning to the page edges. and the very occasional spot, most prominent to the endpapers. Very Good . Ill.: none. Very Good .

London, Blackwood, 1946 - 1957. First edition. Magazine. 14 first edition volumes of Blackwood's Magazine, dating from the year 1946 to 1957. Blackwood's Magazine was a British magazine and miscellany printed between 1817 and 1980. It was founded by the publisher William Blackwood and was originally called the Edinburgh Monthly Magazine. The first number appeared in April 1817 under the editorship of Thomas Pringle and James Cleghorn. The journal was unsuccessful and Blackwood fired Pringle and Cleghorn and relaunched the journal as Blackwood's Edinburgh Magazine under his own editorship. The journal eventually adopted the shorter name and from the relaunch often referred to itself as Maga. The title page bore the image of George Buchanan, a 16th-century Scottish historian. Blackwood's was conceived as a rival to the Whig-supporting Edinburgh Review. Compared to the rather staid tone of The Quarterly Review, the other main Tory work, Maga was ferocious and combative. This is due primarily to the work of its principal writer John Wilson, who wrote under the pseudonym of Christopher North. Never trusted with the editorship, he nevertheless wrote much of the magazine along with the other major contributors John Gibson Lockhart and William Maginn. Their mixture of satire, reviews and criticism both barbed and insightful was extremely popular and the magazine quickly gained a large audience. For all its conservative credentials the magazine published the works of radicals of British romanticism such as Percy Bysshe Shelley and Samuel Taylor Coleridge. Through Wilson the magazine was a keen supporter of William Wordsworth, parodied the Byronmania common in Europe and angered John Keats, Leigh Hunt and William Hazlitt by referring to their works as the "Cockney School of Poetry". The controversial style of the magazine got it into trouble when, in 1821, John Scott, the editor of the London Magazine, fought a duel with Jonathan Henry Christie over libellous statements in the magazine. John Scott was shot and killed. William Blackwood (1776 ? 1834) was a Scottish publisher. These volumes contain the work of such authors as David Wilson Fletcher, R. M. Patterson, Hugh Allen, Tony Smythe, G. Hartley and many, many more. Publisher's advertisements to the front of some of the volumes. Contains a loose, yellow order form for a year's subscription to the magazine. Collated and Complete. In illustrated paper boards. Externally sound with slight rubbing, although there is some residue marking to September 1957 and some light pencil inscriptions to every edition. Tidemark to December 1947. Ink inscription to the rear board of July 1957. Internally firmly bound with generally bright and clean pages throughout. Good . Ill.: Various. Good .
